As most cars go to whooping mileage numbers between tune-ups (100K mi. seems to be the norm nowadays), it seems ridiculous that you have to replace belts before your first tune up. I suppose chain technology is not what it used to be, hence, perhaps the reason of the reverse.

Yes, the next generation Ferraris with cam chains will require engine removal in order to fill it up with gas. $25.00 for the gas and $3000.00 to remove and replace the engine for a total cost of $3025.00 per fill-up. Just kidding !

Many manufacturers are returning to chains instead of belts, including Japanese automakers. American automakers will follow.

I'm guessing that they are doing this because chains simply last so much longer than belts. Since engines are so reliable over all these days, there is no reason to have a customer come in for belt replacements in 20-60k miles (depending on car) when if they had chains they could go forever without any sort of service at all. (I'm sure the service guys are not happy about this so on second though maybe this isn't the reason they are going to chains, ha!)

As for Ferrari? I like the sound of chains personally!

Yeah they may still have to yank the motor out just to get to the water pump, don't hold your breath. Remember they sell cars to race, not the other way around.

I still wish that when they use T-belts belts they were setup like Volvo. When a T-belt breaks on a Volvo 740 the valves have a high enough clearance that they don't hit the pistons. All you do is put on a new belt. I guess the Ferrari would ose performance though as the valves would be set to high, it would idle very smooth though.

Ferrari doesn't miss a trick. They'll still make just as much on maintenance one way or another. We can hope though like Frank says.

The service manager from Ferrari of Atlanta recently returned from Italy where he was trained on the new Maserati Spider and Coupe. He said that all the new generation Ferraris, both V8 and V12 will use cam chains rather than cam belts. That sounds like the cars will require less maintenance than the current ones. We can only hope.
