ferraris in unusual colors are a rare site and the grey 512tr is an amazing looking car.
hopefully ferrari will continue to offer more and different colors in the models to come.

my 1st choice was Azzuro Blue but when I asked FNA they said they never imported any 512TRs in AB
2nd choice was silver but there didnt seem to be any silver cars on the market then so I went with my old stanby color, black, which is difficult to keep clean but looks great.

Michael, Previously being an automotive dealer, everyone on the sales force knows how vulnerable a guy can be when he is looking at one of the most beautiful cars in the world, especially if they think that you can afford it. In my opinion the ball is in their court. When they serve make sure that it is everything you want. This is not a chevy you are buying and they know it. Don't be afraid to push them for what you want. Good price, warranty, regular maintainence according to the owners manual for 1 or 2 yrs.Just a thought. MAGOO

William,

Saw a 512TR today in Black at a local dealer. I was inspired by the pic on your profile.

I must say it looks AMAZING!! Too bad, I've always had a tough time keeping black cars looking perfect.. it takes a lot of work.

Cheers,

Michael

Michael, if u dont really trust the dealer, which u should Not, u can tell them u will close the deal on the car contingent on your independent mechanic double checking everything for u.
the $6k they spent is maintenance, it does not add to the value of the car, very much.
I used to work in real estate, just cus some1 puts on a new roof for $10k & repaves the driveway doesnt make a house instantly worth 10% more than their neighbors, unless their neighborhood is a mess.

William,

Regarding the service item you brought up. If a dealer says they will do the service in house.. how do you know they've done it?

Ask for the replaced parts?
Pictures?

Yes.. I'm fickle..

If my seller on the Grey one won't budge.. I've got a Yellow/Black one in the wings.. for significantly less.

Anyone have a good picture of one in Yellow/Black? The color seems to look nice on 360's and 355's. I'm wondering if it would make a 512TR look significantly larger than it already is..

Steve,

The car sat from early 1999 until now.. and all of this was needed before they would even start or drive it.

Basically, the car was flatbed towed over to a specialist who went through it from top to bottom.

Unfortunately, they seem pretty firm on their price of around 115-120... especially since they just dropped $6k into it to fix it.

michael -- do you mean:

1. the car sat for 3+ years and they did all this work just recently to bring it back to life (the better situation), or

2. the work was done more than 3+ years ago and the car has sat since then (which deserves a significant discount as much of the service interval is used up)?

Either way, 3+ years of total inactivity has to go on the "debit" side of things (i.e., the value of super low mileage offset by the fettling, and risks, associated with a garage queen).

You didn't mention fluids -- I'll assume the normal ones (engine oil, gearbox oil, and coolant) were addressed in the $6K, and with the clutch work, the clutch fluid was probably replaced, but how about brakes? Any 10 year old car would be (over)due for a good flushing -- especially such a disused car.

And finally -- if the tires are original (i.e., ~10 years old), this should be another bargaining point for the buyer.

I'd also agree with William that there probably aren't a lot of buyers in line for this one. Nothing wrong with making a low-ball offer IMHO since sellers never think there's anything wrong with a ridiculous asking price :^)

Ok, just spoke w/ Mechanic who did the work. They're a very reputable shop.. Here's what they did:

Car has 6k miles and they replaced:

Timing Belts
Cam Seals
Cam Gear
Adjusted Timing
Adjusted Valves
Rebuilt Clutch Slave
New Filters (Fuel etc..)
New Front Hood Struts

Apparently the car has been sitting for 3+ years without ever being driven or started.

Total for parts+labor was around $6k

michael -- I think you're in the right ballpark assuming by "15k service" that you mean the timing belts/bearings were replaced and it was done within the last couple of years (the timing belt work is not actually part of the official "15K service"). Maybe even a little less ($95~$100K) would still not be that unreasonable -- alternate colors (even attractive ones) reduce the buyer pool. At $85K~$90K there'd be plenty of buyers (myself included) so they should seriously consider any 6 figure offer IMHO (especially with the Stock Market in the tank). You didn't mention the car's location, and this can certainly play a role too (in what the seller expects and can maybe get price-wise) -- I wound up getting my TR via FLA as the recent prosperity in the Denver area (i.e., plenty of buyers with more $ than sense) had FofDenver adding ~$20K asking ($10K selling?) to similar TRs.

BTW, for some reason everybody seems to want a 355, 355 spider, 360 or 550. Almost no 1 has enough sense to buy a proper flat 12 LOL :)
So u can b sure u wont have a lot of competition on this car

WOW $120K is High!!! who is selling it ?
i got my 93 with 14k miles in 00 when prices were slightly higher for $110.
I have seen 512TRs for as low as $85k, some in the 90s. I think u should be able to get it for low $100s. MAKE them show u the receipt for the 15k service. Best not to trust these guys, anything they promise, get it signed & in writing

I love it too.. now I'm wondering.. what to offer? 1992 512TR w/ <10k mi, 15k service done. They want 120.. I'm thinking around 105k. Am I close or off?

After first seeing Ben L.'s TR in the Showroom, I added grigio/black to my (very) short list of desirable TR/512TR color combos -- gorgeous! (but you should still be able to use it a bit "against" the seller on price IMHO!)

Michael, I have a black 93 512TR & a wrecked 92 I am rebuilding as a race car. They r awesome cars, my favorite road Ferrari, I think i will paint my race car a light silver like your photo.
Make sure u get all the tools, maintenance logs, & books when u buy the car. Also make sure u have a trusted mechanic check it out carefully. Good luck

HEY MICHAEL, you're one lucky dude. What a beautiful car. That goes without saying. When I look at the picture it appears not to be a light silver but has some dark gray or blue in it. I know it is hard to tell from a picture but be sure you will be happy with a conservative color later on. Many times when we are looking at our dreams we overlook the forest for the trees. Truly it is the best of FERARRI. Just don't leap before looking elsewhere. But if you are sold on it, buy it and enjoy. MAGOO
