When I bought my one-owner '88TR, it was undergoing a major sevice, and a differential replacement. It had 48,000 miles on it, with the previous owner using it for many rally, etc. events (except for racing in the race circuits). The dealer put in a 512 TR diff. He said that it is much stronger than the TR's diff, which is adequate, according to him, and it is a direct installation. All they had to do was to send out a shim, to have it ground by a machine shop, but this appears to be standard on any diff replacement. The car still runs great with 58,000 miles, and 3 years later.

I snapped the main transmission shaft on my 512TR, its fixed now :) I was at the top of the hill at Lime Rock track in CT & I was spinning the rear tires at around 70 mph, several mechanics told me that that was most likely what fractured the shaft. It broke a few day later on the road.
I have heard that the 512M trans is considerably stronger & I will do some more research & possibly swap 1 in.
Havent heard about the diff yet but u dont want to do burnouts with a TR or 512TR

My differential just blew up also on a 89tr. Just had it replaced. Old part number no lolnger exists and they have a new a nd stronger unit. The mechanic told me he heard of a few more tr's that had this problem. He showed me my limited slip unit and how it had crumbled to pieces. I did not find out what caused it though because I do not beat on my cars.

My neighbor just had a 512 TR differential put in to replace that of its 1990 TR. The mechanic claims the TR's transmission/differential systems are weak and should not be tracked, or at least handled cautiously. The mechanic claims having call the Master Technician at F. of Beverly Hills for confirmation of his doubts and got the same story. My neighbor was shown the differential and he agreed it was a mess in there.

Is this a common problem with TRs? Should I stay off the track with my TR, or be prepared to replace the Diff. if I do? Anybody else with the same experience?

Thanks,

Caribe.
