Thanks for the responses. The car is having oil seals replaced when it returns I will investigate further based on your helpful suggestions.

Howard - "Interference" is your ear measuring the signal to noise ratio. Either you have a weak signal, or too much noise.

Weak signal - the antenna plug in the rear of the radio is loose, and intermittently fails to make contact. Is there a correlation with rough road, etc.?

Too much noise - Electromagnetic noise is in direct proportion to voltage (high voltage as in spark plugs) or high power (product of voltage and current such as bouncing alternator brushes). Thus, circuits with high voltage, or high current are the ones to investigate. Think ignition and bad filter (capacitor) on the electronic box. Or, think high current, such as in electric motors and their brushes (radiator fans, heater fans, air-conditioner fans, alternator brushes, electric window motors, etc.

Best way to diagnose this problem is to turn the ignition on, engine not started. Find a weak station on AM band, and one-by-one turn on all the motors you can think of (windows, fans, etc.). If this does not offer a diagnosis, then start the engine while tuned to the same station, and wait for radiator fans to come on. By the way, the speedometer pickup will also cause significant EMF. Try reproducing the noise while rolling at 10 mph, and if you hear it, change vehicle speed to see if the noise correlates with wheel rotation.

Just some thoughts. Hope they help.

Along with scott:

Does the interference occur at night, durring the day? Do you have any other power accessories operating? Does this occur near large bass response with a large audio power AMP?

Along with Robert:

Alegedly I have a nice system in my F355, but in the 1.6 years and 10,000 miles, its only been turned on once.

I have intermittent interferance on the radio in my 355. It occurs every few minutes and lasts maybe 10 seconds before disappearing ! It's really annoying. Could it be that the aerial in
the windscreen is damaged so causing the problem?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
