77K miles in a 308QV is not many miles. I remember driving Peter Halpern's 1985 308QV with 110K miles on it. It was the best driving and strongest 308 I have ever been it, and Peter drove his car very very hard. Keep driving.

Getting close to 77,000 on the 308 (40k of that since I bought it in 98), and 150,000 on the Silver Spur (47k of that since I bought it in 2000).

Drive em, don't store em! :-)

Doc,

On the 308/328/Mondial, there is a braided cloth vacuum line that runs from the driver side of the intake plenum (talking injected here, not sure of carbed), along the bottom of the driver side door sill, and up to the brake booster (at the master cylinder). The checkvalve is very near the intake plenum on the driver side of the engine compartment....it is silver in color, inline in this vacuum line, and has an arrow pointing towards the intake plenum (indicating direction of airflow). For some reason, it was very very difficult to get the vacuum line re-seated back on my checkvalve (both this time, and when I replaced the vacuum line a few years ago).

George, how did I decide on the checkvalve? Well....my first thought was the fact that I hadn't flushed my brake fluid in probably 2 years, and even though this wasn't the easiest of all the potential solutions, I figured it was time to flush the fluid. That did not solve the problem, but on driving the car I noticed that as the car warmed up the power braking got better. I began to think that perhaps the vacuum line wasn't sealed properly at one of the four points it has a hose clamp. I probably should have taken the easiest route first and just tightened the hose clamps, but instead I took the checkvalve out and sure enough it was not allowing vacuum to suck air from beyond the checkvalve. It was seized shut.

I just took a, umm, spirited drive, and it is back to normal now. Lots of snow lately, more snow tonight, so that will probably be the last drive for several days. Only 6,000 miles the last 12 months....need to drive it more!

What process did you go through to pinpoint it to the checkvalve?

Just kidding.

While it does take a fair amount of pressure to blow from the brake booster side to get through to the intake side, it does not take a lot of effort to suck from the intake side (everyone following here?). :-)

I put it all back together but have not had time to drive it. I'm sure this is the issue, but I just hope that cleaning out the checkvalve will be a long term fix.

Matt, I was having symptoms of no power assist the first two or three applications of my brakes when first starting the car, cold. Would work fine from then on; until the next cold start the following day. Had it checked and it was this check valve. My independant Ferrari mechanic charged about $35 for the part, plus labor.

It's a "One Way Vacum Valve"...

"SUCK" (draw a vacum) on manifold side..it should open and allow air to pass thru somewhat freely...SUCK on booster side it should remain closed, no air should pass thru. It either passes or fails.

*note: arrow points to Intake Manifold.

OK, so if it takes more than just the tiniest bit of air pressure to blow through it, then it is still faulty.

Any suggestions on how to break it free? I wonder how much FNA charges for these? I don't mind paying a few bucks for one, but I wanted to get in my car and drive today! :-)

Zero Pressure....it works on Manifold "Vacum".
The check valve simply allows a vacum to be drawn on the booster tank and prevents a intake air leak if the booster or down stream hose develops a leak.

The power braking on my 308 ceased the other day. I have pinpointed the cause -- the checkvalve in the line between the brake booster and the intake plenum was seized shut.

I have cleaned it a bit with brake cleaner and blown compressed air through it. I can now blow through it with my own lungs, but it takes quite a bit of air pressure. How much pressure is required to allow air through the checkvalve? I don't think the vacuum from the intake is nearly as much psi as I'm putting into it with my lungs before it allows air through.

Any insight...?
