Bo, I have used it with no engine problems. This is also to say that I only used a couple of tanks of it. However, as it is my opinion and the general opinion of most guys on the chat line, it is overkill. I really couldn't see much difference if any. These engines don't call for that high of an octane and it is a waste. Your manual gives you the octane ratings which I won't go into, but you would be wasting your money using that super octane.

What is the highest octane you can run without hurting the engine? There is a local gas station that sells 114 octane leaded gas (yes my cats are gone) that I have wanted to try but am afraid to ruin something in the engine.

Scott -- Be careful about comparing the minimum RON (research octane number) recommendation and what's shown on the pump which is the (RON + MON)/2. Since MON is less than RON for gasoline (I think), "87" on the pump may have an RON of 91. Also, it seems that air temp, air humidity, and altitude all play a role in this so one size doesn't fit all. Here's a great "gasoline" link (that I must have picked up from the FList):

Since I'm at ~5300' elevation, I run 87 pump in the winter, but in the summer sometimes I'll throw in some 91 pump if it's hot (but like you noted -- any engine at a modest 8.8:1 CR and normal ignition advance could probably run 87 pump all the time). I couldn't find any reference in the link to excess octane contributing to plug fouling.

I use the 87 regular fuel in my 82 308 with no problems at all.

Scott, I don't think the higher octane fuel is carbon fouling your plugs. I think you have another rich fuel problem.

I heard a lot about octane and I'm thinking about switching to 87 or 89. My manual says something along the lines of "Minimum RON 91". Does that mean a minimum of 91 octane? Well, my plugs keep on carbon fouling and I think it might just be to high of an octane. Is there some type of conversion chart for compression and temp that would recommend the right octane? My 82' 308 GTSi has a 8.8 to 1 compression ratio. To me, that just doesn't seem high at all compaired to a lot of modern cars that call for higher octanes and have ratios of "10 to 1" or "11 to 1".
So what do you guys recommend, what do you use?
Thanks,
Scott
