Otto Sounds like the same part. I'd be surprised if the bolt is bent given that it "floats" in the springs, Anyway, pull it off and take it apart, you'll soon find out if it is the alignment of the pipes or a bent hanger. Good luck Philip |

I can't say if it's the same part as yours but the spring in my car has the four bolts you mention. There's a bolt running the length of the spring attached with end caps at each end. I'm guessing the bolt is bent but in any case it doesn't sound like this is a common problem with known solution. |

On the assumption (not necessarily true) that the part is the same as the 77 cars, you can take the spring loaded part off the car by removing 4 small bolts and lifting it up and out. However, my experience is that it tends to spring back into shape. If it is distorted when on the car, I'd look to see if something is bent and holding it under compression. |

I recently purchased an '80 GTSi with 61K miles to enjoy driving as much as possible on the few sunny days we get in the Northwest. I noticed that left-side tail pipes were recessed further than on the right side by almost an inch. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the spring-loaded muffler hanger on the offending side was either warped from exhaust heat or had been bent from a previous backing-up incident (although I didn't see any evidence of this on the tail pipes). This doesn't affect functionality but just doesn't look right either. Has anyone seen this before? And can anyone tell me how the coil is attached to the bracket, whether it can be removed and disassembled, etc.? |
