Mine whines like crazy. Very loud. My mechanic thought the gears were shot, but when he took the cover off, everything was fine. |

Mine does not make any sounds. I use the GM full-synth oil |

This might turn into another thread on transfer gear noise, but just for the record ..., the noise on mine is only at 2000 rpm. So when running through 2000 rpm, either up or down, with or without load, it makes a sort of high pitched buzz. I guess it might be a sort of resonance, (something to do with the tooth frequency and the idler gear ?) Anyway I only really notice it when the engine is hot and I have to pootle along in traffic at about 30 mph. If the idle speed goes down, as mine does when it's very hot, then it also rattles, but not bad. Any other transfer gear noises around ? (by the way, how do you put them cute smiley faces on these things??) |

My transfer gears whine faintly like a small turbo at low speed. Probably at higher speeds too, but the engine noise drowns them out. Drove me nuts until I figgured out what was whineing. |

Richard, I had a very similar problem that was bothering me for several years. I replaced my clutch cahnged all the bearings and it still made it. It turned out my idle was too slow, anything under 900-1000rpms will make the gears rattle as the engine is surging! I increased the idle and the noise went away. I also added a quart of Lucas oil stabliser, I have also been very happy with its performance. I am also using the correct gearbox oil Agip Rotra LSX SAE 75W-90W. |

Thanks to all for the advice. The filler-plug came off this morning with an almighty crack, after being hit with a hammer and left overnight with penetrant on it as suggested. Put the oil in but the 'noise' hasn't improved much. However judging by the very large number of threads on transfer gear noise, it's probably typical. Whoever said a ferrari should run quietly.... ! |

Use/get a 6-point socket (rather than a 12-point) if you're not already using one. |

Richard: DO NOT use a 7/8" socket. Get a proper metric one. 22mm, I think. Try tapping on the top of the plug. Firm, but not so hard that you'll break anything. Corrosion tends to weld these things together, and tapping can break the 'weld'. Put some 'anti-seize' on the plug when you re-install. The first time I removed mine, I had to tap a breaker bar with a hammer. The shock eventually broke it loose. But if you do this with a 7/8" socket, all you'll probably do is round off the plug. |

Richard, The main pan feeds oil to the transfer gears. Jack the front of the car higher then the rear and add the .07 into the main pan so it does not flow out. That should fix it. Matt |

Bit pathetic this. Any hints on getting the transfer gear casing filler cap nut off? I want to put in the 0.17 pts of oil, because the transfer gears have started to get louder, (after an amazing trip up and down the Stelvio pass in Italy - highest pass in Europe? - but that's another story) Anyway back to the filler cap. I've got a 7/8" socket on it and a 3 ft extension pipe, but the sides of the nut are only going to get rounded off at this rate. It seems to be aluminium and stuck b****y fast. Any tips please.............
