Magoo- I was actually thinking of the oil pick up when the engine block gets seperated from the gearbox/oil sump. The dipstick tube is easy to r&r if needed. The flat finned cover is I believe what the original ? was about.

Brian, Do you mean the dipstick tube fitting not the pump pickup.

The studs are 6mm. so the correct torque would be 8 ft. lbs. as on the cam covers. Use a wide blade scraper anbd work around in between all of the studs and it will come, takes the bejazas of patience then you have to clean the old gasket off! To seperate the engine and oil pan you have to also remove the pick up as previously mentioned.

My God, Why don't we use a 5lb. sledge and a crowbar. Every Ferrari tech. has those in his toolbox I'm sure.

The oil/trans pan nuts don't have a specific torque setting. I used new lock-washers and tightened them by hand (using a ¼" ratchet).

If by wedging the pan using a screw driver or a pneumatic cutter/air chisel, you do damage the mating surfaces of the case/pan, use files to smooth out the gouges and sand-paper finish. Don't finish to a mirror-polish, leave it rough (180 or 220 grit), this gives a good surface for the sealant (Permatex or silicone) to grab on to.

Nev, if you get the oil pan loose it will still not come off. You need to remove the fitting that holds the oil dip stick tube.

WD-40
HEAT
LARGE HAMMER
IMPACT WRENCH
NUMATCIC CUTTER-to get my CV Joints off, I took the blunt end of my numatic cutter and let it pound on the nuts for a few seconds. They came right off.
If the above does not work, shoot your self.

Okay, so I want to remove the finned sump panel which the sump plug goes into (308gts) but it's stuck !!

I've removed the dozen or so bolts, but the damn thing is well and trully stuck to the engine ..... I've tried whacking the bezeesus out of it from different angles with a rubber hammer to try and dislodge it, but that didn't work. I dont really want to try and wedge a screwdriver (or similar) in between the panel and the engine, coz they're both aluminium and I'm frightened of damaging one or both mating surfaces .... ?

Any hints, tricks or techniques ?

Also, once I've got it off and put the new gasket on, what torque should the nuts be tightened to (cant find any reference)

Thanks !
Nev
