Thanks for the clarification Ric. I do think we're talking about the same thing. A bearing spreader or separator is probably the correct terminology.

OK, a clarification is in order. I use a press to press out the stub axle. Sometimes the outer bearing stays in the hub, sometimes (most times), it comes out with the stub axle. If it stays in the hub, you can use the internal spacer and a press to push out either bearing. If it stays on the axle, I use a garden variety bearing spreader to seperate the two. Perhaps this is what you're referring to.(?)

Ric, I don't understand. How did you remove the outer bearing from the axle shaft at the hub? The inner race is a very tight press fit on the shaft and there's not enough clearance with the hub to get a 2 or 3 jaw puller behind it. As far as I can tell, at least on my 77 without the split jaw puller there's no way to remove the outer bearing.

I've done 4 sets of 308 hubs in the past 3 years, and did not need any form of bearing puller. Just a press, some arbor plates, and an assortment of sockets used to press the bearings out. What you do is use the center spacer as a tool to press out the first bearing, then the 2nd bearing is easy. Also, as Robert mentioned, if you preheat the carrier, the bearing removal is much easier.

The biggest difficulty I had was removing the old outer bearing. You will need a split bearing puller and press. Split puller is available at MSC.com or McMasterCarr.com. 12 ton press from harborfreighttools. Or just take the hub assy to a machine shop and let them do it.

C et al,

You need a press to press the shaft onto the bearings but if you heat up the hub with a heat gun the bearings will fall right in and out. You also need a good strong set of snap ring pliers. It was alot easier that it looked. Rebuild your cv joints while you are at it, is was very easy and fun!! Oh and replace your bushings and on and on and on........ :-0

Jerry, when you have a bearing getting worn, you get a sound coming from the general area that sounds like you've got big truck tires on your car...sorta' like a rumbling sound. Also, if the noise reduces or goes away on hard turns that is a very good sign that it is a bearing (you are loading the bearing different from normal, so the noise changes).

I have 2 '81 308 GTS's and work on about 1 1/2 dozen 308/328 cars in my area.....I have not dealt with all problems, but certainly have hit on a lot of them....love this site for being able to share experience!

C.Smith, I also have an "81",what was the indicator that tipped you off to the worn bearings? I too may need this but I don't know how to tell.

What other work have you done on the car?

I replaced my right rear in/out wheel bearings a few months ago. I removed the hub assembly and took it to my F mechanic and let him remove and install the new ones along with seals and lock nut. Too much to try and do it yourself unless you have a press to r&r them.

Need to do a rear wheel bearing replacement on my 81 308 GTSI. This is one job I have not done before. Any tips, etc. before I dig into this one? Thanks!
