A friend was on the "list" for nearly 2 years, getting his last week. I drove it on Saturday night. Great looking car, but have to agree that auto not the way to go. I know I am hell-bent on Ferrari, but my TR will have this MB for lunch!!! 300 HP not that much. All the little touches like the navigation system, auto door/no key ignition, etc. will wear thin.

The SL55 is an awesome car but I'd get an SL to cruise slowly around Miami checking out the bikinis :-) I cant see taking an SL55 to the track, the thing weighs almost 2 tons. I heard the editor of the MB Club publication The Star, took an SL55 to Lime Rock and Destroyed the brakes!!! I mean he really destroyed the brake system. He took it back to MB & they were pissed he told them they built a supercar, it should be expected that someone could take it to the track without destroying the brakes. Besides theres no where to use all the performance outside of a track in the US at least.

So I think I may go for the regular SL500 for my borthday in January & keep my 512TR for the track :-)

Well fellas, in reality if you want a real sports car it will be exotic and it will have a stick shift. If you want a car made for the road in the REAL world it would have to deal with the heavy traffics and rough grounds so the Benz was made that way, style, comfort, luxury, easy to drive. If you were to ask me which car I would prefer of all my cars as a daily cruiser in the real world it would be the Benz, no stick , just pure luxury. Don't get me wrong, for what the Benz is, it's a damn good performer for an automatic. If I feel for a sporty drive then of course it would only be an exotic. It's kinda like someone looking for a Ferrari with an auto transmission, a Benz was made for luxury cruising in the real world, like you would not find a stick in a Bentley although they do make a fast model. I love my Cl 600, in my opinion it is the most advanced luxury coupe in the world, excellent materials used to make this car.

i talked to some outfit in FL once about ripping out the tranny on an SLK32 and replacing it with a stick. they said $16K to $20K. couldn't justify it. but with some weight reduction that'd be a blast.

of course you could just get a modified boxster.

i've been on a lot of lists for benzes (i'm on for the SL55 as well). at the end of the day (when the pedal hits the metal, so to say!), their unwillingness to do sticks in the AMG cars has always made me walk.

mercedes just doesn't focus on the target market that bmw and porsche seem to own. they don't want to compete there IMO, and i can't blame 'em for it in the end.

doody.

I have an order on a SL55, I think for the money it will be a good choice over the Brabus. Actually have two numbers but the second one won't see delivery for a while.

I agree Kenny. If a clutch pedal is a no-no they should at least make a killer paddle shifter system.

I still don't understand why they throw slushboxes in these cars, if they had the optional manny transmission, no one could touch them. Imagine the Sl55AMG in stick :-) yum!
