For anybody familiar with the Omega Speedmaster Automatic, 1992 limited edition, 500 produced: Would you know whether this watch is easily found and what the market price should be for this piece? Many thanks. mleder52 |

What do you guys think of these? They look like some pretty decent GP knock-offs. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=31387&item=2603779235 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=31387&item=2603127731

I have a few watches such as a Cartier Panthere, an older all black Heuer (pre Tag) Crono, a Festina, and my everyday watch, an IWC Porsche Design Titanium Titan. It is a fairly rare watch in the large automatic style yet weight is quite low.

Stu. The main reason the Daytona SS is most sought for is because of its low retail price (and then limited production). The 2-tone Daytonas are around 9k for a new one but its just too common. |

I would recommend a TAG...I have a midsize Link Series Chronometer. Its Authomatic also with no battery. Retail is $1750 but I got mine for around $1200. E-mail me if you want a good website to get them at. Andrew |

Girard Peregeaux makes a fantastic line of Ferrari watches. I think the least expensive runs around $3800 or so, though. Another vote for the Omega line, but make sure it's an automatics. Great movements. If you want a good Swiss auto for cheap, there is always Tissot. Most people overlook Tissot, because they don't cost a whole lot, but I've seen a few that have 25 jewel movements for around $500. Stay away from the cheap Movados and Tags. The Tag Kirium series is great, but the cheapest on is around 1495, and that's an quartz. Tag makes a fairly weak auto, so if you are going to buy a Tag, be careful about spending a lot on an auto movement. |

I didnt know that there's a thread about the Daytona SS. I almost bought one this morning for $6075(retail) but got away. Someone beat me to the store by half hour...I still cannot believe it - I was so close. |

The movement in Daytonas were made my Zenith for the past few decades or so. Now, Rolex is making their own movements for the Daytona, so I don't think it's inferior (although many true watch snobs think Rolex movements in general are one of the most inferior on the market). If you go to www.timezone.com you will see Roxex vs _______ debates that will make our Ferrari vs _____ debates seem like a little tiff between friends. I know in Canada, the SS daytona is quite rare, and the shops sell them for $10,000 CAD dollars, which is considerable more than 2k pounds. |

I'm in no way a conoiseur (sp?) of fine watches..The reason I want a Steel Daytona is LUST... I saw it someones wrist a few months back and since then...... well I'm sure that you guys, being Ferrari enthusiasts, fully understand where I'm coming from! In fact, at list price, which I have been told is around 2K, they are not horrendously pricey. Is the movement itself inferior.... ? |

If we all chose our the things we own on common sense then none of us would own a Ferrari. Watches, like cars, appeal to one's inner flair and sense of style. I am nuts about watches as I am about cars. If you truly want a good watch at a good price buy a Swatch and change it every year. At that rate you will spend much less than a Rolex, Cartier, or the lot over the course of your life and end up with a very reliable and accurate timepiece. This of course is the intellect talking....to hell with him....for all of its faults I WANT A STAINLESS DAYTONA. I have looked in over 21 countries worldwide and have yet to find one. I refuse to pay a penny over list price and am banking on 'lucking out' in finding one. For me the thrill is in the hunt and I look forward to the day I capture my prize (I am also trying to get one free by scoring a class win at the 24hours of Daytona). I guess the point I am trying to make is buy the watch you like. Shop around and look at what catches your eye before looking at the price or the name. I wear a Stainless Rolex GMT Master II and love it. My wishlist does include: 1. Chopard Mille Miglia 2. IWC Leonardo DaVinci 3. Eberhardt Tazio Nuvoalri 4. Patek Phillipe Gran Complication 5. Rolex Daytona |

Also, the Submariner has the date on it. The Daytona has completely worthless functions unless you want an expensive stopwatch. |

Manu, Don't get the stainless Daytona. For the same price, or less, you can get a new 2-tone (stainless & gold) Submariner. It really is a nice watch that can be dressed up or down. In addition, it will hold its value much, much more than the current overpricing of the stainless Daytona.

This is KILLING me.... I've been thinking about a new watch for AGES and have been wearing the same Tag that my father gave me back when I was 12 (it was about twice the size of my wrist back then)..which is almost 13 years ago - although nothing special - the sentimental value is immense... I'm lost to be honest - I want a new Steel Rolex Daytona but WILL NOT pay over list. Perhaps the choice is a bit cliched... IWC is nice.....Cartier is a little over the top.... |

I spent a lot of time researching brands, etc. In the end, as with the 308, I had to let my personal style preference dictate the decision. Was looking for a black faced, simple but sharp staninless steel watch. Found what I was looking for in a Movado. Specifically, this one: http://shop.store.yahoo.com/wristzone/0604143.html (Also here): http://www.jomashop.com/movlinstains.html It goes well with fomral (tuxes), business (suits), casual, and works particularly well with excessively spirited mountain drives ;) Had heard about quality issues with Movado but this watch has been solid for me, owned for 11mos now. --Mike

Regarding being the 1st watch on the moon FYI. On 1st March 1965, OMEGA's Speedmaster chronograph was "flight-qualified by NASA for all manned space missions" as the only wristwatch to have withstood all of the U.S. space agency's severe tests under conditions of zero gravity and magnetic fields, extreme shocks, vibrations and temperatures ranging from -18 to +93 degrees Celsius. In the same month, the watch was for the first time worn officially on board the Gemini 3 mission. The greatest moment in the Speedmaster's history was undoubtedly 21 July 1969 at 02:56 GMT, when it recorded man's first steps on the Moon's surface. The Apollo 11 mission was a milestone in history and the Speedmaster became the first watch (and the only watch since) to be worn on the Moon. With this unique accomplishment came a unique nickname: the Moon Watch. In April 1970, the OMEGA Speedmaster rescued the Apollo 13 mission from a potential disaster, earning OMEGA the "Snoopy Award", the highest distinction awarded by the NASA astronauts. In another historical event, the Speedmaster was worn on the wrists of both the American astronaut Tom Stafford and the Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov during the historic Apollo-Soyuz space rendezvous. This was the first time the cosmonauts also wore the OMEGA Speedmaster. Ever since, the Speedmaster has been the official chronograph of all Russian manned space missions. |

Tom - I have a few different watches, but I really like the Speedmaster. I bought it yrs ago from Tourneau's vintage collection(under $600). They are manual, so you have to wind them - no gravity in space so no use for the self winding movement. Keeps perfect time and they are the "Moon Watch", if you want somthing which has a little history. |

I used to have a collection of watches (6 or 7) a few years back (sold to go racing). From my experience there are a lot of nice well made watches from reputable swiss companies in the $1000 - $5000 range. I owned a Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso, Rolex Explorer II, Bell and Ross Space 2, a couple of TAG's, and a Omega Speedmaster and a Girard Perregaux 250 Gt watch. Of the watches mentioned the only one that I got anything for when I sold it was the Rolex. The rule of thumb is that in most cases you will get back what you paid for a Rolex in 5-10 years. This applies to any Rolex, however some like the Daytona watch are instantly worth the same or more. My wife has a Rolex Ladies oyster watch that a watch dealer offered her what we paid for it in 1992. Of the other watches mentioned the TAG's seemed to be the lowest quality. the Bell and Ross and the Girard Perregaux took the biggest hits when I sold them (Bell and Ross received 40% of what I paid for it, 60% for the Girard Perregaux). The Reverso lost about 35%. All were in brand new condition. The watches that hold value well are Rolex's and Patek Philippe. the rest will depreciate so buy any watch because you like it not as an investment. I kept the Omega Speedmaster as a once in a while use watch, but use a trusty $50 Timex Ironman watch most of the time. Regards, Jon P. Kofod

Most new lower brand watches loose their value (i.e. Movado, Hamilton). There are some mid-range watches that are ok, but can also loose value (i.e. Ebel, Concord, Omega) However, most higher brand watches retain value (i.e. Rolex, Patek Philippe, Lange). If you're looking for a good stainless watch, go with a Rolex. It is worth $ anywhere, anytime. It can be dressed up or down and it is bulletproof. Unfortunately, I am a watch junkie that has taken interests in the higher end pieces so take my advise with a grain of salt. |

i have the speedmaster and it is a great watch. don't pay big bucks for a quartz watch. the internals are the same as a swatch, so you might as well get the swatch and save yourself some money. expensive watches need to be automatics imho. in that case you are getting a true piece of workmanship. your budget of under $1000 does not leave much room but....if you don't mind what the brand is try tudor (mostly same movements as rolex, and sometimes even the same look - their chronograph is a dead ringer for a daytona), or zenith (which makes the movement which went into the daytonas until a few years ago). |

Go to worldofwatches.com. I have bought half a dozen watches from them. They have great prices and great service. I dought you could get a nice tag for under a grand at a jeweler but could get a nice one for $800 or so online. The kirium is a nice tag and the seamaster is an great watch as mentioned. A seamaster will run around $1300 to $1600 depending on quartz or automatic. You could get one for a grand or so on worldofwatches. |

My favorite is the Omega seamaster also, what a cool watch. Schumi wears an Omega, the Speedmaster though of course. You can get the Seamaster for like $1100-1200 from big places, small local places will want more like $1700 though. Someday I'll get it, for now though my $100 stainless swiss army watch does just fine and no worries about it whatsoever for the last two years, who cares if I lose it, scratch it, etc. (the $1100 saved, actually $1200 cause I conned the old man into getting it for me, are allocated for 308 go fast parts). There seems to be so many people with Tag watches, they were the most recognized in auto racing though, especially the original Heurs (missing a vowel I think?) before they were with Tag. |
