The simpsons is the worlds best show, bar none. Family guy was a close second, but it was pulled for being too offensive or something.

They never reveal the state but I always think it's IL because Mayor Quimby is Richard Daley Sr., dead Chicago mayor.

I think they live in all the springfields. They just take whatever part of each city they need for that episode. ocean, mountains, desert, cities, trains, nuclear, dolphins, snow etc.

RI is probably closest.

Where else can you get the bus fare for the bus saver ticket for $5 to NYC

Where else can you take the car and go to Capitol City in a matter of a few hours.

They keep fluttering back between me thinking Illinois or Rhode Island. Remember the episode with the Dolphins that attacked the town (they did something to get them angry) that episode suggests it's near the shore or RI, but in other episodes it seems to me it is a lot more like springfield, illinois. Two of my friends are absolutely ridiculous with the simpsons, like they know all the episodes by name, etc. and I like them quite a bit too, none of us have figured it out though.

in that episode lisa says "if you look at the clues its easy to figure out."
At one point i was thinking Springfield, VT because one time snake was wearing a Middlebury T-shirt, there was some other thing that made me think that too, but i forgot. In the "behind the laughter episode they said it was a heartland town.

By the way Peter, what about when they showed what states they were now banned from, and someone marked off another state.

I remember there were only a few states left that they were still allowed in...this almost revealed it, but I don't quite remember. Anyone rememeber this, that should narrow things down.

Erich, they came really close to revealing the state, in the episode where Lisa and family go to Brazil to find the orphan boy. She finds him in the parade and he says he would've replied, but he didn't know which state to mail it to...

I don't think the state has ever determined, but...Groening used to live in Springfield, OR and at the University of Oregon in Eugene (right next to springfield) there is a statute which looks suspiciously like Jebediah Springfield.

Thanks guys.
