Tyler,
I am a lawyer in Dallas and went through the internship process at my firm. You can have your friend contact me at the e-mail in my profile. I would be glad to share what I have learned.

Tyler:

What is she interested in doing with the law? If she has a specific interest, then she should look for a firm that has a practice that will allow her to look at that specific area. Most of my work for instance is Plaintiff's employment litigation, and some work for competitors.

I'm an attorney and part of our firm's hiring committee. I have collected alot of materials regarding interviewing and have weeded out the bad stuff. Feel free to contact me at [email protected] and I can send you/her an article about interviewing and the various interviewing personalities. Its one of the best sources I've found for what not to do.
Otherwise, just follow the basics, like decent resume paper. I would never criticize someone who wears a $100 suit to an interview if it looks decent because I know they might not be able to afford a better one, but everyone can afford a $.25 piece of paper. Thank you notes/letters afterward. Actually say at some point in the interview that you would like to work for that firm. Major kudos for that.
One pet peeve is some manuals suggest you put in your cover letter that, "I will call you next week to set up an interview"-wrong! Assertiveness is good, but that's over the line.
I could go on, and some of it is just what the interviewer thinks. Yes, that varies but that's why some firms are a good fit and some aren't.
If she has specific questions, feel free to contact me.

One of my best friends is about to finish her first semester at Georgetown law. I guess law firm interships are extremely difficult to get. She has a couple of interships lined up with big companies but she would really like a law firm internship. I figure the lawyers on this board have been through this before, any pointers for her?
