I would go with Northwest Portland or the Pearl District. Although, neither is too F-Car friendly (mostly on-street parking and lots of traffic).

There is a streetcar which runs from Northwest through the Pearl and into downtown, so the commute would be pretty easy. Of course, you could even walk if you have a good umbrella-- from NW 23rd Ave to downtown is only about a 30-minute walk.

Erich
I live 35 min. from Portland, Great place. NW is very hip. Lake Oswego is up scale. Beaverton has way to much traffic, but good car lots. Spend some time driving around, But I would avoid the east side of the river. Some run down places. Really cool area the pacific northwest!!

My son is staying in an 'executive' apartment right next to the KOIN tower. Real nice place, Ferrari-friendly parking. They have short term rentals, for corporate types that need a temporary home.

Lots of nice areas in Portland, the one I just mentioned is close to the courthouse (real easy walking distance). However, most everything on the *west* side is OK. Some places might have a bit of a transportation/parking problem, especially as you get near the yuppie NW area.

East side? Highly variable. Lots of scary neighborhoods, but some just fine. Possibly awkward commute, unless you're near the MAX line. MAX is the local train, quite clean and safe.

email me if you have further questions. However, I'm disappearing to LA for a week or so. My son could probably be of great help, as he is there.

I'm looking for a condo/apartment/ rowhouse/ townhouse in Portland, OR. I'll be working near the courthouse. What are the good/better areas and which areas should I stay away from? Thanks.
