basically here is my situation. I got a loan check sitting on my desk for up to $46K since that is what I asked for. Was looking at 328's very seriously then work situation changed and who knows if I may get laid off so kind of sitting tight for the moment. Still looking every day though at what is available. I found both the Don L and this guys car on ebay. Don L had been available for a long time i thought. (they sold the white/tan tr and now had a white/red). Anyway since availabel for long time I "contacted the seller" and said if they could not get rid of it I could offer $46K. They politely declined and pitched a 328 trade in after I said I had been looking at those. Martin chekced it out for me and it was not a color I wanted.

The other ebay guy seemed desperate and I acknowledged to him that he had said no less than $55K. I told him I was not trying to insult him and that if he couldn't sell the car I could pay $46K.

I figure timing is everything. If I can find a guy who wants to unload his car quick like he says who knows what his bottom $ is. Sure the $55k sounds good and the cars both look great, but something is only worth what the market will bear.

Anyway, I am not trying to say I was right and he was wrong. I was just surprised about his reaction.

Apparently the seller is hoping to get at least $58,000 from the looks of his ad at:

http://adcache.collectorcartraderonline.com/10/0/4/37119204.htm

Listed three times just days apart...must be desperate to sell.

Jim: The ad clearly states ".....$55,000 MINIMUM". That to me means; don't offer less, just walk.

When I had my 88TR for sale, I did have very low offers.......no, I didn't insult them. But, it appears that these same people will never have the car they want, unless they can STEAL it at a too low price, and then go brag about it. I decided to keep my car.

Are you willing to share with us the price you offered?

Ross,
looks like 2 different cars. ONe is a little higher in the back than the other, or is that my blurry vision?

Jim,
remember, white may not be your favorite choice. JScott would be happy and likely only buy it if it is white. He'd pay a premium, you think discount. Color is such a diverse thing. Although as a dealer I agree, I'd buy the car also for less thinking it will sit a while.

Then if white is not what you are looking for, don't make an offer. I thought you were looking for white since the TR at DonL was white too.

although nothing excuses his behavior, the car actually looks pretty good. not my favorite color but could get over that. in one picture, it shows 2 white tr's in a garage side by side. is this some kind of digi pic trick or do you guys think he actually has 2 identical cars.....

(this reminds me of a story i put up here on the 4th of july....)

Well I can buy just about any TR I want for $55K in this market so there is no way I am buying a white one for that amount.

Some of these guys act like they are desperate or they have had the car for a long time. Also, who knows what they paid for it or what they "have" to get out of it. You don't make money when you sell you make money when you buy and if I can get a great deal on sometihng then so be it.

I wonder how dealers would feel if I called them a bunch of f'ing jackasses when I saw their published prices. Basically you will get screwed in all transactions unless you are buying from somebody you know and you know the "truth".

I have this great cartoon about real estate. It shows the parties involved in a transaction and how they see the house:

The seller sees a mansion
The buyer sees a shack
The agent sees a bag of $$$
the bank sees a house as it is

Jim,
if you made him the same offer you made Don L I can see his point of getting pissed. :-)

This car really looks nice and in well kept condition. I think it is priced right at $55K. I mean if you offer him $ 40K for it, you have to be prepared to get the door slammed into your face.

I get offers on my eBay auctions all the time. From boats as trade-ins to will you give me the car for free, I am a poor student but really love these cars to "I pay $50K for your prestine 348 Spider"
Although I never respond unprofessional, sometimes you have to wonder what these guys are thinking.

I am sure he would have reacted different at a different offer from you.

Jim - I'm on your side, pal. No need for anyone to be an a-hole like that. And, from what I know of you, you are a good guy and I trust that your communication was very pleasent.

On a side note, assuming that papers and work have been done to the TR, that *is* a nice price he has listed, though.....

Chris.

I appears clearly to me that he wants a minimum of $55,000 for the car. The reserve, though not stated by the EBAY proceedure, is $55,000 since it has a starting bid of that much. With a Buy it now of $55,000 then that is exactly what the car will go for, no more, no less. If you put in a reserve amount with EBAY it has a higher cost to complete the sale. I see what he is trying to do though not very tactfully. He was probably insulted to be offered less than the asking amount since in his mind he clearly wants $55,000 for the car.

a SINGLEwide !?!?!?!?

oh the SHAME of it all!

i have found a lot of clueless sellers on ebay. it's unfortunate. i have luckily never encountered someone quite so obnoxious. i've made many lowball bids, but they've always politely said "thanks but no thanks" - they haven't insulted me!

doody.

look at these responses from this numbnut.
here is his auction if you care.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1872832172

I replied to his intial response of "sticking my check up my ass" by telling him to come come to Dallas and I would show him how far my foot would fit in HIS ass. I also commented that he said "NO RESERVE" which to me means it goes for what it goes for. If you say no reserve then say min bid begins at $XX,XXX that in my opinion is a reserve. I was polite to this guy and he had to go and be a jerk. I also told him what a nice choice of vacation properties he chose by investing in Dallas. Heat and traffic are a very luxurious and relaxing getaway from the Virgina cold.

response # 2: you are a stupid fucking redneck Texan... figures!! there is NO RESERVE.. i guess you an Jethro went to the same school, and attended the same reading class. Stick to the piece of 308 you are trying to buy.....
and as for your offer to "come to Texas" We have a vacation home in Dallas....I'll drive over to your doublewide next time we are in town

Intresting wallet choice to say the least.

I am sure there are my more TR's out there. He/she would be nicer to bidders, regardless of the bid amount. It's always the high bid wins anyway.

I admit I made a low offer for a TR on ebay. Told the seller I was not trying to insult him and that I had a blank check (to demonstrate i have the money and am not tire kicking)

His reply was that my check should fit up my ass.

Kind of funny if you think about it. Wonder if he would have said that to my face? the internet offers such anonymity. Seems it is rampant these past 2 weeks.

My reply to him was very "colorful". maybe he will see the humor in it as I did his......
