The car is my families third car, which basically means its mine. It isn't titled under my name, nor is it litterly mine. The condition of my parents getting the car is that it is in automatic because my mom would have to be able to drive it considering she wanted to- which sucks, but its better then nothing.

Believe it or not, insurance is only $140 more per 6 months then my Volvo S40 1.9t- there is a 85hp difference!

I have my grandma's Toyota for the winter because she is in Florida, but as soon as there is no snow on the ground, I can assure you the car will be driven (why drive it in bad conditions when I don't have to...)

I have no problems driving stick, but unfortunately, I have to suffer because of my mom.

A lesson in life: never turn down a gift BMW 3.0L

Went to a BMW dealer today to test drive the Mini Cooper S. I saw the new Z4... crazy lines but I could get used to it. The sales guy told me BMW tried to make the Z4 look more masculine than the "big-shoe" Z3. Mostly females driving Z3s around here.

I know at my particular BMW dealer, they "lend" out 3series to train buyers with the stick.

Kenny, nice car i'm impressed. You say your 17, what are you going to do when it needs servicing?? How about insurance? Going to drive it in the winter?? Hopefully you will keep it for more than a couple of months.

Congrats,

Ryan

PS, is it an automatic? :-O

The Z4 has grown on me- first time I saw it it was nasty, second time, okay, third time, cool... I still think the Z3 is a better looking car. If only I had the means for a M-Roadster mmmmm yum

I kinda like the Z4, but I don't know about better than the Z3. I like the side vents on the Z3.

If you've been to the track (Lime Rock/Watkins Glenn etc) over the summer, chances are we have met. I work/worked for Will H, and hung out with Adam Goldman and Steve Soloman most of the summer...

IS this your personal car, ie. in your name, etc or is it a car that you will use, but it wont be your car? as far as loks are concerned the Z3 is better, i dont find the Z4 very attractive. My firend's dad has a 97 2.3. its a fun car, the shifter is fine, i dont find the pedal clutch hard or anything but ive only driven it 2x. I wish my parents bought me a car. i figure i'll buy my own after i gradute if i dont live in a major city where a car is impractical.
DES- explain your comment?

Kenny, you're right, a 3.0 Z3 coupe shares the same engine as the Z4.

Randy, I've never experienced sloppy shifting in my friends car. Actually that's one of my favorite things about the car is it's nice shifter.

I had a 1998 M Roadster. The outdated rear suspension setup actually made the car more fun on the street (never tracked it). It was only the 240hp version but even that was enough to overpower the rear end and get the car all squirrely in the corners. I only kept the car for five months and sold it when I bought my 996 coupe because the BMW was just too small and too cute for me. Honestly, though, even with the Porsche being more powerful and far more advanced, the little Bimmer has it beat as far as being fun to drive, at least on the street. As for the shifting/clutching being sloppy, I don't recall that being the case. Maybe if I went back and drove one now after all these years with the Porsche, I might think differently, but I don't think so.

Tim, that's so altruistic of you...

Kenny, if i'm gonna steal- er, i mean, um, "put aside" 80k to give to you, so you could get the Z9, we'd have to work out some sort of co-ownership rights or something...

No, hes never stated it. he has stated that he can, yet his friends that i know have told me personally that he is unable to operate a vehicle equipped with a manual transmission. let there be no more discussion of this topic. lets keep it civil. i will not take any more chaep shots at kenny for at least 1 month.

The Z3 - not a bad car. Definately better than the Z4 as far as looks go. But the Z4 has a few more horses. The Z3's suspension is old-mid-80's technology and will always need some refinement if you plan on tracking it.

If you can afford an M - definately go for it. But drive one, see how you like it. My impressions are tainted in a way, and I feel that the Z3 shifts and clutches very sloppily, but that's just being subjective.

Kenny, stick it out and get a Z9, if it ever goes into production- it's got a real cool gull wing driver's side door and a regular door for the passenger's side- how sweet is that...?!?

Kenny

One of my best friends has a late 2001 Z3 3.0 coupe. I guess it's a pretty rare car as most people have the M coupe. He loves it. It drives great. Very responsive and communicative handling. Wonderful engine. Only problem he has had is a rattle in the passenger A pillar(they have a TSB for this). It goes in next week to get fixed. I love his car, fun fun fun fun fun.
