Yes, I think model specific sites like FerrariChat.com and the others have the advantage for each model and general discussions. The goal for this site is general technical questions. For the most part, changing the oil is changing the oil and a clutch is a clutch. My target market won't be the fanatical model specific know everything attitude users like most car boards. Target market will be the everyday Mary and Joe who want to find a quick answer whether the diagnosis and quote they got from Bill mechanic is good.

With this target market in mind, would you have topics named...

"Is your mechanic screwing you?"
"Servicing your own vehicle"
"Where should I get my car serviced?"
"Proper care of your vehicle"

Doody, I realize there's many other more popular board software out there. I'm not convinced they offer any more performance or any other benefits for that matter. They're all very graphics intensive with heavy signatures and avatars. If there's not any performance difference, then I would prefer the simple format of this board vs. the others. Why specifically should I consider one of these other boards? Convince me why they're better. Now's the time for me to switch, if any time.

the problem with that site is it isnt brand specific. I;ve found that non brand specific sites arent good places for rational discussions. im not going to give an example of a non-brand specific site where this is a proble, but you all know what one im talking about. on the good side, it is a tech site, so i dont think that will be a problem. you better get ed gault to check out that site.

rob - you might consider more robust forum software (eg: vBulletin, even UBBThreads is more robust) if you think you're going to get tens of thousands or more people.

my two pennies. this forum software is adequate, but far less featured, and far less user friendly than vBulletin, for example. i've never seen anyone run a huge forum on this software.

doody.

Rob,
I think this sounds like a fantastic idea. This new site could turn into a tremendous resource for a lot of people. Ad revenue is definitely plausible.

Best of luck!

Rob, does it have a DES filter...? (sorry, i couldn't help it...:-))

Seriously, it looks pretty complete to me, but then again what do i know about technical Q&A...?

Of course, what about a tool forum...? All about tools, which tools to use for which jobs, tool brands, etc...

Just a little bit about the vision for this site...

The idea started from how successful the FerrariChat.com Technical Q&A section was. I think many people have questions and those that know the answers feel good about helping and can also generate business that way. I think the target users will have below average to average auto tech knowledge. I imagine most questions will relate to basic maintenance or to confirm what their mechanic is telling them.

Since I'm used to and like the current set-up of this site, I don't have problems with this new one.

I'm about ready to open a new site that although doesn't have my passion like FerrariChat.com, I think it has great ad revenue potential.

Please take a look and offer your feedback before I release it to the public. You can't post messages yet, but that part functions the exact same way as FerrariChat.com. I'm looking for advice for which topics to list. Remember that it will start very small (smaller than FC), but eventually the market is any car owner in the world.

I will also need those in the business as Technical Advisors. You'll get your business and yourself in your own profile on that page of the site. This will be free advertising for you, in return I just hope to have an army of experts in various automotive areas to assist users.

Here it is...
