Ken, in a way you hit the nail on the head. It's all about money. The movie producers know there will be less attendance for a movie with Penn in it than some other star.

I have to go know and talk to my lawyer about me suing Microsoft for not letting me be CEO just because I don't have the proper credentials. It's pure discrimination against folks like me without the proper education. LOL

Give me a break. Penn can say what he wants, and the producers can hire who they want. And they don't want Penn. Even if there was a contract, there's probably a good conduct clause in it. I'm sure the majority of Americans would say Penn violated the clause.

I HAVE to weigh in on this.

1. Yes Penn has First Amendment rights, doen't mean you have to listen. Problem is these airheads have such easy media access it's hard to avoid them.

2. It was Alec Baldwin, not Mel Gibson.

3. I don't blame the producer for nixing Penn. Atendance at the movies is down - many who feel as offended as I do by these millionaire commies avoid movies featuring them. I will NOT go to anything with Madonna, Streisand, Baldwin or the other left wing radical Clooney in them.
Needless to say I don't go to a lot of movies! That's OK, the internent is much more entertaining. But if I was fixing to drop megabucks in a movie I would avoid any actor who has pissed off half of America with his/her half-baked goofy opinions.

and that's my $0.02 worth

Ross, I don't think Mel Gibson said anything like that! Baldwin yes, Gibson no.

I dont see how anyone can consider actors even remotely make up average American views. Familys generations of actors in an industry that wrote the book on nepotism, benefits of fame and fortune far beyond that of some regular Joe handing down the family business.

Remember when you're teacher told everyone in class that someday one of them could grow up to be president... Well if I'm ever a teacher they'll be none of that, crush those little bastards' hopes and dreams while they're still young.
Joking aside, that is a very good point. That said though, I'd still have to lean towards the politicians over the celebrities (remember, celebrities does include anna nicole smith).

Can't really say politicians reflect the view of the average american either. After all, you can't get into office unless you're a millionaire.

Actors clearly reflect the true voice of the people more than politicians do. I mean to be a politician all you have to do is be elected, I mean that's nothing... To be an actor you truly have to be someone special. Going to singing lessons while you're young and having expensive acting coaches while you're growing up clearly gives you a better sense for the mood of the nation and the potential threats in the world.

The bottom line is that most actors are idiots and most people are equally or greater idiots which leads them to care about how actors live, how their social lives are, their political beliefs, etc. Think about it, could MTV news really survive if people we intelligent? Would Madonna's new supposedly controversial video that's coming out be on every f_cking news channel if people weren't stupid?

I think it is funny that being a famous actor makes these idiots experts on public policies and world affairs. Give me a break, I am glad he lost the part.

Also, if you are so pro-american then why dont you join the army? alot of people can talk the talk, but wont walk the walk if it becomes an inconvienece.

We've come a long way from the times when Jimmy Stewart and Clark Gable joined the Army Air Corps during WWII. I wonder how our troops will feel knowing that Mr. Penn not only gets to stay home in Hollywood while they fight a war, but that he wants $10 million dollars on top of that for all his "damages"? We had Hanoi Jane during the Vietnam war. What now, BAGHDAD SPICOLI?

As posted on my board by "V.S.":

"Actors not doing what the government wants them to do is completely normal. Using the fame they get from movies to push their political agenda is just crap.

And its Bing's choice to hire whoever he wants. Penn wants 10 million for breach of oral contract? Just for being such an about that I'm glad Penn isn't getting the part. "

"Actor Penn Claims Lost Movie Role Over Iraq Views
Wed Feb 12, 4:02 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor Sean Penn (news) is claiming in a lawsuit that he lost a movie role because of his public opposition to a U.S. war against Iraq.

Reuters Photo

But Movie producer Steve Bing has countered in his own lawsuit that Penn is "irrational and irresponsible" and accused the actor of trying to extort $10 million for a movie he had no deal to star in.

Bing and Penn hit each other with Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuits on Tuesday in a bitter feud over the putative movie, "Why Men Shouldn't Marry," that could result in a classic courtroom showdown.

Penn, the ex-husband of Madonna (news - web sites), accused Bing of "borrowing a page from the dark era of Hollywood blacklisting" by allegedly reneging on a contract for him to play the lead in the movie after Penn aired his views on Iraq in a January television interview.

Bing, most famous for a bitter dispute over paternity of British actress Elizabeth Hurley (news)'s child, termed Penn's claim blackmail.

Bing alleged that on Penn's return from Iraq, Penn threatened "to turn their business dispute into a First Amendment crusade" although it had nothing to do with free speech, threatening to tell the media he had been forced off the movie because of his opposition to a U.S. invasion.

Bing said he had never closed a deal with Penn but had spent millions of dollars on pre-production for the movie which he wrote and intends to direct in the belief that the actor would be on board.

Penn claims breach of oral contract and is asking for $10 million in damages. Bing claims civil extortion and is claiming $15 million in damages.
