I know that same feeling. I play a violin that was made in 1809...Something about the history behind it all. Imagine all that instrument has been through...Even more amazing is a bass I got to play that was made in the year 1670 and is worth $250,000 dollars. Now THAT had history I know this isn't about coins, just thought Id share my thoughts on the "feeling" of antiques like you guys mentioned

Jay: I know exactly what you mean. While I don't have anything older than the early 1800's, it is a strange feeling to hold something that old in your hand. Like the Indian pennies from 1864-68. Right during the Civil War. That's why I'll probably end up holding onto any really old or valuable stuff! Dave |

A few years ago I bought some old Roman coins off ebay just to see if I would like it and have been hooked ever since. I had alot of fun cleaning 2000 years of dirt off them. I think it is a great hobby and if you find anything valuable great, if not, have fun. Just the idea of holding something that old in your hand is a humbling experience. I wonder what the people bought with this money, and who they were, it makes for some interesting conversation. A good book for Roman coins and their value is called "The Handbook of Roman Imperial Coins" It's tough to find but it is very detailed and gives good historical facts about each coin and the Emperor who had them minted. |

Dave: You probably mostly have 'bullion' or 'junk' silver coins, just worth silver value. i.e. - They're legal tender, but most likely don't have any significantly rare dates. The exception would be the dollars. Call around to several coin dealers and ask "How many times face value are you paying for silver coins?" Altho you will find some shysters, this is basically a commodity item and most bids you receive should be reasonably close. Also, see if you can get a copy of "Coin World" at a newstand. It should have dealers stating what they are both buying and selling bullion coins for. Be forewarned that the price may be a little disappointing, as silver isn't worth much right now. ($4.52-4.55 today) Value of common date silver should be about 2.8 X face value. You might go to a book store and get Yeoman's 'Red Book' by Whitman publishing to see if any of your coins may be rare by date and mintmark. The values in the 'Red Book' are vastly inflated, but you can compare one to another to get a comparitive value. i.e. if a 1964 quarter is shown as $1.50 (WAY overinflated), then anything that shows as, say, $2.00 or more may be worth holding out and selling separately. Drop me a line if I can be of help. Hans. |

Dave, you got mail. Don't rush into anything. Information is power. Time to get a little education and have fun at the same time |

Dave, even if Argentina won't do the exchange anymore, i would still consider consulting a professional- you might have a whole bunch of collector's items there... If not, maybe they'll be worth money 10 or 20 years down the line- enough for one of your kids to put a down payment on a TR... Let us know if you make a move and how it turns out... |

I've come across close to $1500 in silver coins. Everything from dimes to dollars. Now mind you, that's $1500 if you count a dime as a dime and a dollar as a dollar!!! I'm not quite sure how to go about determining their value and liquidate them and not get ripped off. I sold some Confederate paper currency down here only to find out that I made roughly half what they were worth! I also have $21,000 worth of Argentinian pesos in mixed paper currency. I found these back when the exchange rate was roughly 1-1 with the US dollar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unfortunately, they are from the 50-60's and Argentina doesn't use these bills anymore. I was unable to exchange them anywhere! Anybody have any advice on how to proceed? It would be nice to think I had a healthy down payment on a 512TR sitting in a paper bags in my living room!! Dave

Arlie that depends - I have several 1943 copper cents, but they started life as steel cents before chemistry class LOL. Now that V nickel is another story. |

I bought some Roman coins for my grandparents last year, they're actually very inexpensive. Many B.C. coins too. |

I think that I have an old 1913 V nickel and a 1943 copper penny. Are they worth anything?

What is the general view pn cleaning coins? I have a silver coin from the Atocha shipwreck that I got for a steal, and it looks like with a bit of careful sonic cleaning I could greatly improve the detail and look of the coin. But...I don't want to destroy it's value. Mainly got it to have it framed and hang on the wall. |

Dave: I used to be an avid collector. At one time I had one of the more significant collections of Sheldon variety large cents. A divorce caused liquidation, and bad eyes have prevented returning to the hobby. What do you have? |

Just as much a novice as you, Dave... Nothing of any real value... i used to have 6 Canadian one-dollar bills that, from what i understand, aren't made anymore... i have a two or three coins from Nazi Germany... Other than that, i think everything else i have is pretty much run of the mill... Nothing's in plastic cases or books, etc... Email me if you'd like though, to let me know what you've found... |
