I agree with both William and Doody, the best way to go is to have the system adjusted by someone certified by Joe Kain or CEDIA. But, as a good first step setting everything with either Video Essentials (the latest version) or AVIA will make a huge improvement. New sets come out of the factory with the settings so wacked, especially the contrast way too high, they are hard to watch.

For a minute there I thought I was on AVS Forum or Home Theater Forum.

in addition to VE, you might want to check out AVIA too.

i agree with wmhart that a professional is mnore than a good idea if your system warrants it.

however, if you follow the setup discs, they can in fact get you pretty close to accurate most of the time, so they're definitely worth the $50 or so.

good luck.

You know, the test video and equipment are all fine, but ultimately, the thing should be "tuned" by somebody that knows what they are doing, and has a good "eye." After i got my first front projection system set up (NEC industrial projector with ancillary boards; Sony industrial line doubler, started with laserdisc, bigassed Pioneer LD S-2, later went to DVD when it finally became available:Meridian player/processer, etc.), i had some guys certified by Joe whatever (forgot his name) who brought a Philips color anaylzer, and did the set up according to his methods.
A week later, my guy came back to look at the set up, and with his Arnold S. accent (via Israel) said "Who's being fuking vith the system?"
He quickly readjusted certain parameters, by eye, and no matter what the specs said, the reds looked better, the image was more film like and i relied on him. For basic parameters, probably OK, but i was never happier than having Izzy (yep, that's his name) adjust my set.

Todd,

Take a look in Best Buy, they'll usually have a copy.

I am looking for this DVD and I don't want to pay $50 for it, and can't find it at blockbuster. I need the DVD not laserdisk. It is for adjusting the colors and balance to perect on a hometheater setup
