We will stay at the Best Western somewhere by Burbon Street.
Supposed to be very nice 3 star. Did that through Room Finder.

Stay at the W Hotel in the French Quarter, it's VERY cool. The other W near the casino is also nice, but the location is not as good. I like the Fairmont also, but don't like the walk to (or FROM) the quarter. Something about Canal after midnight always makes me nervous.

when I used to come here for vacation I used www.roomfinders.com to get good rates on rooms in NO.
Hard to find a bargin rooms IN the Quarter.
May have to stay on the edge of the Quarter on Canal street- lots of hotels there.

The Fairmont is a VERY nice hotel. Lot of history in The Blue Room. You would not be disappointed.

Anyone ever been at the Fairmont?

Historical (I like old building), 4 star, Balmont Street accross the french quarter.

Got my parents with me so no excessive hotels.

I would go for the Windsor myself. My wife and I get a suite there at least once a month just as a little "getaway". Definitely top-notch! It's also right across the street from the casino if that's your thing. The Ritz would be my second choice. A very nice hotel, just not on par with the Windsor!

Martin,
You are in luck! There are several wonderful hotels to stay at in New Orleans. Here are the ones I recommend that will keep you close to the action in the French Quarter:

The Ritz-Carlton New Orleans
921 Canal Street
(504)524-1331

The Ritz is fairly new and is within a 3 minute walk of Bourbon Street. Very nice bars inside with live jazz on the weekends.
----------------------------------------

The Windsor Court Hotel
300 Gravier Street
www.windsorcourthotel.com

This is where the participants of the 3rd Annual French Quarter Concourso stayed at in October. The Windsor Court is a fabulous hotel. I would say it is about an 8 minute walk from the French Quarter. There is a wonderful restaurant across from the Windsor Court called Restaurant August. Might be worth your while to check it out.
-------------------------------------------------

Others that are worth looking up:

Wyndham Hotel (Canal Place)
100 Rue Iberville

This is formerly The Westin Hotel. It sits about 20 stories above the Canal Place shopping center(Saks, Brooks Brothers, etc...). The lobby has the best view of the Mississippi in the city. Large 15' windows overlook the river and the French Quarter. About a 5 minute walk to the French Quarter.

The Royal Sonesta
300 Bourbon Street
(504)586-0300
http://www.royalsonestano.com/

Great Hotel that is right in the middle of Bourbon Street. You can request a room with a balcony that overlooks the madness.
--------------------------------------------------

I'll try to think of some activities that are worthwhile. If you need any restaurant advice I would be happy to make a couple suggestions.
Take care

You picked a good weekend. Things should be fairly quiet since Mardi Gras is the 4th. If you want you can email me direct and I'd be glad to lend a helping hand!

After receiving such a great tip from you guys on Vancouver I am trying here again.
My parents, my wife and I will be down in New Orleans March 7 till March 9.
We do not want to do Mardi Gras. Too crazy.

Need some advise on a good Hotel to stay in. Close to French Quarters. Close to sightseeing, maybe some recommendation for a plantation visit. Any guided tours worth doing?

John, looking in your direction. Maybe we can meet for a drink somewhere. Who else is out there in Party Town?
