I am trying to use the Powerquest lost & found software to search the drive by connecting to another computer and hopefully retrieve something.

Let my fingers crossed!

Tx., folks!

Matt was on target when he said they are by default stored in your profile. Its been so long, if you install NT4 on top of NT4, or upgrade NT4 to Win2K, the profiles are deleted and recreated with the new OS. That might explain why they simply disappeared and you have your current e-mails in your profile from Win2K only.

If the physical location where they are stored was not overwritten with data during the upgrade, there is a minute chance you could use an undelete program to scan the FAT file system and hope that the files are contained in an unused portion of the hard disk and recover them.

Shareware programs out there like Emergency NTFS Undelete and the like are limited trial versions only allowing you to recover the first few MB at most of a file.

If you have a second partition or hard drive, you could install something like Norton Utilities and run the undelete feature against your other hard disk and see what comes up.

Thank you for your advice Sunny. I did find the .dbx file but it only contains the latest emails received on the day after Win2000 Prof. upgrade. I suspect somehow the outlook express 5.5 of the Win2k Prof. write over the previous OE6 .dbx file.

However, I really dont understand how it could happen as the location of the email storage is totally difference between Win98 and Win2k Prof.

I could still get all other data likes Ms. Office and other applications but just no more previous emails.

Do a search for all files/folders for *.dbx

There will be several files, one .dbx for each folder you had in your Outlook Express.

You need to change your store folder to the directory these files are located in by going to Tools - Options - Maintenance and then click on the Store Folder button in the middle. This will show your current store folder and you can change it to the store folder where your old items are.

If you didn't repartition and format your hard drive, and you have these files, let me know if you need more info.

If you can't find these .dbx files at all, nor any .pst (MS Exchange/Outlook personal folders) or .ost (MS Exchange/Outlook offline folders), I think your out of luck.

I did 98 to 2000 Prof and had no probs...just have to find your e-mail file...but I thought mine worked right away after load. However it does put those mail files under a specific profile name.

Pat,

when it upgrades, it installs as a Fat.

Ming,

Check C:\documents and settings\*your username*\local\outlook\.pst

Did you backup your e-mail before the upgrade by doing an export? if not, your mail may be gone. From 98 to 2000 is different then 98 to ME. I would have recommended 98 to XP

Doesn't Win 2000 require you to do a format and a change over to NTFS?

Hi,

I encountered a big problem as one of my friend try to upgrade my Windows 98 to Windows 2000 professional. After the upgrade, I could not find my emails anymore?!! I try to search the dbx, mbx and pst files but nothing was able to found.

Any clue?(I am using outlook express for emails and I was using IE 6 on Win98)

Thank you all.
