Erich, this compensation range happens frequently in large metro areas as long as you're good (fast and accurate).

I know of more than one Ferrari tech claiming that range and up to $85k on their 1040 to the IRS. I know through a friend of Benz tech's in LA getting over $100k.

Same with all marques. If you're good, and have an intelligent manager / general manager, you'll make the same in the right metro area. If you suck, you'll starve on "come-backs". I'm certain that in less densely populated areas, the compensation drops, but not too bad.

Yes, all commision / book hours. Though you eat your mistakes with charge-backs.

I've worked at GM dealerships(Buick,Pontaic,GMC) for the last 14 years. The pay has just started to come around the last 5-6 years. Chris has it right. Most dealerships pay this way. The better techs make the better money because they can beat the "book time". For example: to replace a fuel pressure regulator on an 02 GMC Sierra pays 2 hours according to GM factory warranty time. I can change it in less than 25 minutes, but still get paid 2 hours! There have been a few occasions when, due to my experience, I have "stubbed" 30+ hours in one 9-10 hour day! Our shops salaries range from,I'd guess, $20K - $65K. I personally know a few Ford techs who make $80K-$100K. But they are true "company men" ie:10-12 hour days 6 days a week. For me the lost time with my wife and 328 doesn't justify the extra $15K+. Unfortunately most dealership owners still fail to recognize the importance of a shop full of good techs so job turnaround is fairly high in this business. Gotta go where the money is!

I thought that for tech jobs, all the different jobs were paid on how long it is suppossed to take. Example - to replace a water pump takes x hours and so you get $x whether it takes that long or not. The really good ones who make a lot of money can usually beat the book time, get more work done with their extra time, and thus make more money. The not so good ones take forever and take much longer than it is suppossed to and therefore don't make that much.

They make a big deal out of the salary. I don't blame them though, might attract some who wouldn't otherwise consider it as a career.

When I started working on Ferraris I didn't even ask how much they would pay me, I was so excited that they'd "Let Me" work on Ferraris and actually give me money too I forgot.

Times have changed.

I saw an infomercial for WyoTech, a mechanic training place, and they said BMW/Mercedes techs make like 60K or 70K. Really? And is this what most mechanics make or is this kinda high because of the marque? What's starting salary like?
