I have had a 530i Sport for the last 2 years. After coming from an E34 525i, the difference was nothing short of spectacular!!! I LOVE my 530. I too was tempted by the 540i Sport, but have always been a bit leery of the V-8's after all that Nikisil nonsense. Besides, I feel the straight 6 appeals more to the BMW purist in me. That 6 has V-8 grunt! The extra 60 (or so) HP wasn't missed. Besides, that's why I have the Ferrari and my old Nova SS drag car. The 530i has more than adaquate power for it's size. We drove it from New Orleans to Indy last year for the GP and cruised at 80-100 most of the way and still got 28+ mpg! Unless BMW gives the next gen 5 a severe case of the FUGLIES (ala 745) I will stick with the 530i!

Anyone own either of these cars that can share their opinions? My father and i test drove a 540i with the sport package and nav. It was one hell of a car. It had decent pickup for a 4000lb car, and handled flat as a board. The only thing is the sport package is a $4100 option, plus the $1300 gas guzzler tax that goes along with it. Consumer reports also rated the 530i (and the whle 5 series) very well. it was their best pick. We havent test driven a 530 yet, but will. I just wanted to know if anyone has owned both and can tell me if the ~$9k between the 540 sport and 530 sport is worth it (~9k is the diff in quoted prices, not sticker prices). |
