The Canon's are the best but you pay a little more for them. The S40 has been replaced by the S45 (4MP) but its price maybe too high for you so try the S30 (3MP). I bought a Canon G3 which is 4MP but a higher range camera than the S45 so that will be too much still. The Canons come with 32MB memory, whereas most cameras in this price range come with 16MB. However, the only option you typically need is more memory and a flash reader for convenience when transferring to your PC (you don't have to have this though). This is a great site for reviews http://www.dpreview.com/ . I bought it new at an internet store and saved $100 or so. Be careful they try and sell you a lot of add-ons where they make their margin.

I should have read this earlier. I just bought a digital camera also, after weeks of price and comparison shopping. Iwent to best buy, had my eye set on the Sony cybershot P72 with 3.3 megapixel and 3x zoom I had my mind made up. Until I got there and started playing with the Sony MVC CD 400 WOW what a camera. Since Sony was coming out with a new version of that camera. I got the sales girl to reduce the price by 40% plus a $100 mail in rebate. So I got the Sony CD400 4 megapixel camera with 6x zoom and Carl Zeiss optics a case a 4 year service plan, two packs of CDRW's out the door for $665.00 Pretty cool huh? I seemed to be a better buy then the camera that need specific soft and hardward to use it. So this one I could pop the CD into anyones computer and there the pictures are. I am very pleased with it and recomend it highly.

I have around a 2 megapixel, but it is not just the size, the quality also comes into play. It just seems as though the more expensive cameras have better colors/quality pictures. A nice macro / zoom mode is always nice to have as well.

DES, check out www.froogle.com . I've never really used it, but it supposedly finds the cheapest prices. If the place uses coupons, try to search online for some codes for that site.

I think this was mentioned earlier, but you might also want to invest in some quality rechargeable batteries. There are 2 different kinds, I don't remember specifically, but there are a few informative sites out there that explain the differences and pros/cons. It should be about 30 bucks to get you set up with a set of those.

You will also probably want a larger memory stick/card while you are at it as well. Make sure to take these things all into consideration.

Circuit City is no better than Sharper Image IMHO. Find a reputable web seller through shopper.com or try Best Buy.

I'm still happy with a 1 megapixel Olympus (D500, I think, an SLR) we bought 4 years ago. Unless you're printing out 8X10s, I think that even 1 megapixel is fine. I usually cut pictures to 1/2 size to post them.

You guys rock, i seemed like such an informed consumer when i went out last night...! :-)

i found a Sony with 3.2 mega pixels for $229.99...

...but i didn't buy it. There are still a few places i'd like to go before i make my purchase... Some representative from Olympus tried to sell me against all the other cameras (and not for an Olympus camera) when i was at Circuit City... Although most of the cameras were relatively the same from store to store, there was one or two whose prices ranged within $100 at different locations... i'll do more seaching tonight & i'm gonna go back to The Sharper Image to see how many mega pixels that tiny camera has... i need a camera before i go to the car show, so i'm definitely getting one in the next day or so... Thanks, all, for the input and suggestions, i really appreciate it... One last question, though: If there were brands you would absolutely stay away from, at all costs, which one(s) would they be...?

Recommend the Canons. They use standard Compact Flash memory, not SD/MMC, not Sony memory sticks. CF memory is very mature.

I've got a Powershot G2, the camera is truly amazing and is very refined.

A step below, the Canon S series I'm a big fan of as well. Powershot S30 (3.2MP) or S40 (4.0 MP).

You do need > 3 MP. 4 MP will produce beatiful, non-compromised quality 8x10s, either on your printer or at a photo place.

For a digital camera, don't go an internet ghetto store. 1. They're ghetto, and 2. There's a full retail package and then a not-so-full retail package with these things. Personal experience.

My quick .02.

Sony has nightvision on their dsc-707 (I think that's the number) model. You can also do about 30 minutes mpeg video on a 128mb memory stick. The only drawback is this model is too big to drop into your pocket, so it's not too good for taking to parties or nightclubs.

I just checked the price of them on ebay, and they have been selling for ~$400, new they were almost $1,000. I'd definitely check out used, you can save a lot of money and get an awesome camera.

If you can get one with nightvision, do it. It makes it so much easier at night to take pictures. Make sure if it doesn't have night vision that you get one with both the LCD and eye hole (or whatever it's called). At night the LCD rarely shows much so you need the eye hole to be able to take good pictures.

when you find the camera you want to buy, go look it up on www.pricegrabber.com. They will list a bunch of places you can buy it with up to date pricing AND shipping charges. That's the quickest way to find out who has the best deal.

I got a sony like this one...well I think it was the model before and it totally rocks. Very easy to use and takes great pics. I got a 64MB memory stick so I can take 160 pics in low res and I got a memory stick reader for my home computer.
Camera $229
Memory Stick $60? I think
Stick Reader $20 I think.

I've owned two Sony's and one Fuji. I like the Sony cameras the most. You might want to check out some used cameras, the re-sale value is next to nothing since newer and better models keep coming out.

Des,

I agree with Tom nothing less than 3 mega pixels. We bought a Sony P71 (I think) with an extra memory card (64mb) and some extra recharable batteries for about 300-350. Great Camera by the way (although I love Sony)

Des,

I agree with Tom. Has to be at least 3 megapixels. The more megapixels the better the resolution, especially when you want to enlarge.

At the stores here, the prices do not vary much. Best Buy, Circuit City, Ultimate Electronics, Wal-Mart and Target are all with about $10 of each other. Sony makes nice one that it 3.2 megapixels for about $300. Kodak has one about that price also.

I believe you are making a wise decision if you purchase a digital. With what you will save in developing costs alone, you can pay for the price of the camera in a relatively short time. Buy the best camera you can actually afford even if it requires stretching just a little. I do not believe you will regret it. At least not until next year when they drop the prices of the 3 megs. because they just came out with a 6 meg. But, that is the price of progress.

DES, I have a Cannon Elph digital and I love it. They are priced in your range I think.

This topic was covered a while back in this section, try a search. If I remember correctly there were quite a few good suggestions. Good luck!

Rather than buying the cheap, disposable cameras for $10 a pop, everytime i need to take pictures, i've convinced myself that a digital camera will be a wise investment - who could disagree...? With recent transpirings and future transpirings looming on the horizon, it's obvious that i'll be getting a lot of use out of a camera, so i don't want to buy the "$65 digital mini-cam" from the JC Penney Sunday flyer; The Sharper Image has a really nice, very sleek and small Digital Camera marked down from $300, to $279... Although $300 is a bit pricey, i still think it would be a good investment and don't really mind paying that much, if i've no choice left... However, it would be nice to save a little money on this purchase, too, and i can't imagine i'm the only one here who needs a camera - i'm sure most of you have these things... With just about every electronics store chain available to me, where have you found the best deals on digital cameras...? Am i being a little idiotic by wanting to get the small one, even though it probably costs double what every other one costs...? Input, suggestions, death threats - they're all appreciated... Thank you. :-)
