Steve;

I bailed out of San Jose three years ago and moved to Sonora,CA. It is 125 miles east of San Jose, 60 miles from Yosemite. It is the West slope of the Sierra foothills. I bought the house in 1997 for $170K (4BRM, 3BA, 3800SF with decks, pine and cedar trees on 3 acres). The house is now worth $450K, but there are a great deal of nice homes here for $275-$600K. This area is still a boomtown. Its small-town America with lots of 'FCar roads', water-snow skiing, fishing and golf. It seems the Bay Area is moving up here! I see the house values to double in the next five years...You should really check this area out! Feel free to correspond with me at [email protected] or surf the web for Sonora,CA.

We are seriously considering moving to Peachtree City, Georgia. It's about 20 minutes south of Hartsfield Airport. Another planned community with 2 lakes, several golf courses, BMX track and skateboard facility, an amphitheater, swimming pools, a couple of fishing ponds, and eighty miles of golf cart paths. You shop and commute by golf cart or GEM car; yet it's not a retirement community.

Ive heard good things about Costa Rica but I think Argentine women are much better looking. When you seriously want to check out Buenos Aires Ill set up a tour for you or if I am here well go out together and see the sights :-)

Damnit William, I was all convinced I was going to eventually move down to FL for half the year and spend the other half in Costa Rica, but your swaying me toward Argentina. I'm gonna have to go check it out sometime. Sounds incredible.

Steve, we do have some days when its a bit humid but the climate overall is wonderful. I have lived in just about every region of the country at some point in my life but have yet to find one that is better than Georgia. IMO we have it all here. I actually live just north of Atlanta in a small town called Woodstock but can easily be in downtown in about half an hour or so. That way we can have the benefit of living in the country and have access to the things the city has to offer without living there. If I want to go to a ball game for example I can just zip down 75 and be to Turner stadium in about 45min. The comunity I live in is called Towne Lake. It is a planned comunity with it's own golf courses, movie theaters, resturaunts, shopping, and medical facilities. Basically you never have to leave Towne Lake if you want to. The house I am refering to is just a couple of miles from were I live now. My wife and I liked it here so much that all we did was move to a bigger house in the same community. We love it. You should take the time to visit if you really want to see what it's like. I would be more than happy to show you around if you like.

Steve... A long time ago I thought I wouldn't like the humidity in Florida but that's changed. I'm in NW FL so it's not quite as heavy as the southern parts but you get used to it-- the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. When you cross into FL from the northern border, it's like a different world with the vegitation, etc.

300K would buy a nice house with $2K taxes here.

If you must have dry, (and no threat of hurricanes), AZ is very nice -- Carefree,AZ if you can afford it...

I have a beautiful 3K SF 3 bedroom 2.5 bath split level w/ finished basement and 2 car garage I'll sell you in Atlanta Georgia for $170K. It is located in a really nice planned community with two pools, 7 tennis courts, and it's own softball field. There are several public access golf course within 5 miles. The yard was professionally landscaped and has a sprinkler system. We added a 960 SF multi-level cedar deck out back with a hot tub and screened room. My wife and I bought it new lived in it for a couple of years during which time we did a lot of upgrades to things like appliances, flooring, carpeting, ect. The house is completly turn key. We lease it out right now but have been considering putting it on the market. The climate here is mild fall and winter with next to zero snow fall, absolutly gorgeous spring and summer. Economy is good here and there is plenty to do.

weather and cost of living are some aspects, but what about the rest of it, entertainment, neighbors, taxes, airport proximity, politics etc. to suggest good climates is easy, but its the other stuff that will make or break the decision.

Austin Texas; a couple of years ago it made the #1 spot on most livable cities.

A) no state income tax
B) low gas prices
C) 3 days of winter/year

Las Vegas baby!!

Stay away from the strip but real estate there is really affordable. Lots of communities are sprouting up everywhere and if you purchase in the early planning stages you are almost guaranteed immediate appreciation.

Cool thing about it is that it's cheap to fly in and out of there too!

Hawaii. It's warm. It's not CA. Depends on the island though. Molukai is nothing but peaceful, and pretty cheap. Also small and you may go stir crazy. Are you limited to the US?

What about Mexico or the Carribean?

Nevada. Check out Minden. A little warm in the summer, at 4000' winters aren't too bad. I don't think Nevada has an income tax, property tax is 3.00 per 100k of assessed value (35% of fmv).

good one. my wife and i are constantly debating issues like this. one place we both like is sante fe, NM, but the cost of living is high there and they do get winters. As an added bonus, there is lots of good nuclear waste in the surrounding countryside. The coast of north carolina, etc. There was a town in the Cape Fear River area, Wilmington, i think, that was pretty cool last time i went thru.
Northern california if you go far enough north. Its quite beautiful there. And, i guess Oregon, but its my impression that things can get pretty remote there.

I know a lot of Egyptians/Arabs and the funny thing is some of them actually want to go to Iraq!

One is a professor in New York... he teaches computer networking or something, and is trying to get a contract in Iraq...

Also, a dentist who is considering going there and starting a practice.

I am trying to convince my dad to go there as well, he would do well with 5 years exp in Egypt with an Arabic-speaking wife... He could probably make some good money quickly, but I don't think it is gonna happen unfortunately...

Sarasota, FL

Lot's of cultural activities, nice weather, great beaches(Siesta Key)

Houses can still be had at very reasonable prices. I think we even have a few chat members who live there.

Iraq? -- Sure, there might even be a few million $ stashed in the walls

Obviously, I went back and edited my original post to add the "not CA" requirement. Outside the Bay Area, LA, etc., I think we could meet the #1 requirement in CA, but the taxes are too high and the politics too wacky for me...

Dave -- My wife keeps saying Austin Texas too (she's originally from McAllen), but I'm looking for other alternatives!

Probably some fixer-uppers in Iraq.

1) could get a palace, perhaps in that price range.
2) definitely warm weather climate
3) not in CA

DES, the only place you can get a 3000 sq ft home in Calif. for 300K or less, you would not want to live. Trust me. It was this way 10 years ago when we loved there, and it has only gotten worse.

The wife and I have thought about cashing out the equity in our home and semi-retiring somewhere mortgage-free and with better weather so we're looking for input on where:

1. we could get a reasonable 2,500~3,000 sq ft home for ~$300K or less, and

2. with a warm weather climate.

3. not CA -- BTDT don't want to go back...

Any suggestions? TIA.
