Vince, the hidden implication is more at 'Carbon copy of the real McCoy'... i'd be the same person (still the real McCoy, just a 'Carbon' copy, 'cause of the different name) - Wayne, you're almost always on the money - how do you do that...? Mr. G., 'DES' as a nickname never caught on - only here, & that's 'cause no one really knows my real name... There are other factors involved, as well... Wayne, importance is in the eye of the beholder; this bears some considerable weight in my importance department... Jack, LOL, thanks for the suggestion, i'll keep it in mind... Mark, the movie was ok, but i don't like the name.. Mike, the check is in the mail - call me Carbon... Russ: Des Christopher...? i'm just not feeling that one, sorry... Peter, do you ever worry that you've actually memorized lines from The Simpsons...? Mr. G., PRINcess PrinCESS is really cool - i guess she didn't go with it, though, huh...? Call me youthful, but i would've egged her on... Sir Han Sir Han is another cool name... Just the name, though... Sort of related, a CSR at an insurance company, who i speak to regularly has the last name 'Horsey' - how cool is that...? |

Dom, another Simpson's name-change was when Bart and Lisa stumbled onto Homer in the living room, with a toilet plunger stuck to his head... Bart: "So what are you going to change your name to when you grow up?" Lisa: "Lois Sanborn" Bart: "Steve Bennett"

How about you keep your name and send me the money that it would take to change your name and I will just call you whatever you want? Really, you should just keep your orginal name. |

DES how about Corbon Dallas? For anyone who hasn't seen "The Fifth Element" it's the name of the main character. I only mention it because it is vaguely similar to your suggestion. Seriously, L Wayne is right, there are a lot of more important changes one can make in life. Like a sex change... Of course that would rule out Vince's suggestion... |

Vince, I would guess that's more or less the point. It's an obvious play on words: someone that's authentic (The Real McCoy) and yet a fake (Carbon Copy). Dan, there are more important changes one can make to affect their life. |

Des You're right about what I really think you should do. Keep your name but use Des as a nickname. Hey I understand youth a while ago my daughter wanted to change her name to princess Princess. (pronounced PRINcess prinCESS) I've found sometimes if you don't say no this too shall pass... |

I knew a flight surgeon once who changed his difficult name to Max Best. My vote: Des Christopher Then whenever folks ask you what the Des is short for, you can fill in the most appropriate one of the many Des______ words that you know that fits the occaision. Gives a nod to your glorious past and suggests a saint who knows where he's going... I've heard the Dutch are good with changing names... best, rt

DES, am I understanding this correctly? You want a name to use in real life? Jack P.S. A buddy of mine is using "Tazio Novante" as a chat name. He's a HUGE Tazio Nuvolari fan (like me!) and he drives an Alfa Romeo 90. 90 translated into Italian is of course... Novante! Has an incredibly credible ring to it. JH |

Yeah, but DES is only my initials and i'm rather tired of my given name... i figured if you replied to this, you'd suggest i keep the name i have and i know why - you're a wise person and i can respect the subtle advice... i thought about changing it to DES a while back, but that's just not realistic... Change is good... No one goes through life with just one car or one tooth brush... Why should i go through life with just one name...? Especially if i'd rather have a different one than what i currently have... |

Des, I know you will not believe this but that is actually the first and middle names of my best friends dad. My best friends first and middle names are Larry Dilworth. I will not expose their last name here but can you imagine having to answer to Harry Dallyrimple. His mom and dad must have really wanted a girl and were angry because he was a boy. |

Depends on the context & your professional appearance & demeanor. For me, it's not just a name. Sorry to be so vague, but it's 500 things that go into making that 60 second evaluation of someone, for me at least. But the name does not help; of course, it may not hurt if the othe rfactors are all good. In fact, it may become a conversation piece that breaks the ice!! How about Zack McCoy? Sounds real, sounds hip, sounds like a chick magnet!! |

Dave, serious advice is exactly what i was looking for, thank you - no offense taken... McCoy isn't that important - neither is Carbon, really, but the two combined to form a personal meaning and i just thought it was kinda cool... i continue to question whether it's too comic booky, as well, but i can't seem to come up with something better... Valentino Rossi is not for me... If i'm gonna change it, i want it to be something original and unique... Valentino Rossi sounds too flashy to me... Since i've been toying around with this idea, Carbon has grown on me... i have the forms and instructions, etc. to make it happen, i just need some final opinions on the name... Dave, your opinion is exactly what i was looking for; if i walked into your office and introduced myself as Carbon McCoy, would you be able to take me seriously...? |

Well, since you asked for my opinion...I think it sounds silly. Like either a pro wrassler or some comic book wannabe like Buckshot Jones. Were it me, I would want a name that people remember, that people (especially women) say with a sly smile, and not a smirk or snicker (I am not trying to demean your choice here, just offering opinion), and a name that easily rolls off the tongue. I would pick Valentino Rossi for myself. But sisnce you want to use the name McCoy, how about Zack McCoy? |

DES, Why do you want to change it? What is your name now - something retarded like Herbert Von FinkleDinkle or something? Here are some cool names I like... Nox Max Gort (would be funny) Timor Prince Rock Strell Eno How about Tubi? Would be cool. Carbon is a little ghey... I mean it's right there on the periodic table. I always liked names that kind of "flow" so you don't know what the hell the person said. I went to school with a girl called "Pia Rossi". Say it together and it sounds like one long word. For example if your last name was Ellin or something... "Carbon Ellin". Say it together and it flows nicely. The name has to be cool and flow together. So you won't change it to Thundercocken von Cuminquicken"? That would take some niblets to change it to that. |

DES, I was thinking of changing my first name to "Thundercock". It has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Actually, I always liked the name "Cain". So evil sounding. I also kinda like Caleb or for something a bit wacky, maybe "Niko" (knee-co) or something. Do you know there is a guy somewhere that changed his name to "Optimus Prime". That's pretty ballsy. It would be HILARIOUS to change your name to Megatron Decepticon or something. I dare you! I DOUBLE DOG DARE YOU! |

How about Ayrton Ascari? The only thing that matters is if you like the name. These days names are so odd in general that almost anything is just accepted with a smile and nod. You will get a bunch of questions about your first name, so have a quick answer prepared. "It's a family name" tends to work well and nobody questions it.

Tillman, how about Carbon Fiber...? Steele doesn't do it for me and McCoy has a personal connotation built into it; i concur with your statement that odd names do make unique, lasting impressions on people... i'm really leaning towards Carbon McCoy... Take it from me: odd first names make an impression. Once people understand the name, then they remember you forever. That's not always a good thing. That being said, Carbon McCoy is a damned odd name, but it beats Max Power. How about Carbon Steele? |
