Jack is right. Processes and procedures are, per se, not copyrightable. There should be a right to create, in your own hand, drawings of the car/parts/assemblies to depict and illustrate the repair process.
Trademark and unfair competition laws prohibit not only your use of logos and brand names (other than, with respect to use of the brand name, to truthfully identify what the manual covers), but also any overt or implied suggestion that the manual is authorized, or condoned by the car manufacturer.
Your question about the computer progam aspect does raise some interesting tangential issues, in that computer programs are potentially patentable as well as copyrightable,(and may be protected by trade secret) and if you developed a diagnostic program to run on the more modern cars, you could run into a host of other issues.

Pat,

you wouldn't need any permission if you avoid all copyrighted text and graphics (which include the logos).

So, copying procedures and drawings from a factory manual is not allowed, nor using the Ferrari logos (including the "script" version).

What legal problems could one have if they wanted to create a new set of engine manuals for the computer? Lets say someone wants to design a new computer program for repairing the 308s engine. Would you have to get Ferraris permission to create this or because it is a procedure so to say would you even need Ferraris permission? Thanks in advance
