I am also member of Shadows of the Iga ,trained in Nin Po . Under S. Hayes one of the first Americans to train in Japan in Ninjitsu. Currently training in a system called Lua: which literally means dislocation of the joints or bone breaking techniques. This is a Polynesian Martial Art . Nika, Practiced martial arts off and on for 20+ years off and on. Started with tae kwon do, went on to shotokan karate, then kajukempo, and now Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Currently am on hiatus from training because I got injured and now just haven't got back into it. Martial arts is so much more rewarding than going to the gym and treadmilling. After you become proficient in the striking and kicking arts, consider Brazilian Jiu-jitsu to round your game on the ground. BJJ is good for smaller persons like myself because it stresses leverage and technique over strength. My instructor who is maybe 5'8" and 155lbs just toys with people who are 100lbs heavier. Doug |

I don't, but my Mom is a 5'2", 51 year old 2nd degree black belt. Took her about 8 years of hard work to get there. And yes, it is for real....I'm 6' 200 lbs and have about a 400lbs bench press and my Mom really could kick my a**! Atleast I don't worry about her ever getting mugged :=) |

Greg I should be way better than what I am, for as long as I have been going. But I don't train as many days as I would like to. Lets just put it this way. We have a new guy that is a police officer. So he has his police training, some Jiu Jitsu training, wrestled in high school, and he is about 250 pounds. I'm 190, and can beat him. Takes a bit longer than a guy my size, cause he is very strong, but non the less the technique comes out on top. So I would say I'm fairly good, but nothing spectacular. I really need to train more days to get may game were it should be. There are two Rickson reps in TN. Their info is. Hatcher's Karate & Jiu Jitsu 1403 East Broadway Maryville, TN 37804 (865)984-3979 Nashville Mixed Martial Arts Academy 100 Oaks Mall, 2nd Floor 719 Thompson Lane Nashville, TN 37204 (615)297-4430 Eric About the flying arm bar. A guy that used to work for me, would tease me about Jiu-Jitsu not working. He was into lifting weights, and boxing was his thing. Anyway, one day he grabbed my by the throat and said "now what is your Jiu Jitsu gonna do". So I introduced him to the Flying Arm bar. Hehehee. After he was done squeeling about his arm, I said "That's what my Jiu Jitsu will do". The stuff works great. Yes there are other very good martial arts. But the way I see it, Gracie Jiu Jitsu is to Martial Arts, what Ferrari is to Formula 1. |

I did not take Karate but did the HtH combat course in the USMC whic is more geared toward killing people. But I can say that the Martial Arts are a wonderful workout and really fun to do. DrS |

If any of you are interested in BJJ, Muy Thai, Judo, Boxing or any other Martial Art and how they relate to Mixed Martial Arts competition (i.e. UFC) you should check out http://mma.tv/TUF/ I should also warn you that you should have fairly thick skin as they can be a little harsh sometimes, so dont take things too seriously. Also I would stay away from asking Karate questions until you are a little more familiar on how things work there : ) Saying that, is is the best place in the world to learn about MMA/Realistic modern martial arts. Nika/All: If you need help finding a BJJ instructor or info on tapes, here is the Bjj forum http://mma.tv/TUF/index.cfm?FID=11 There is also http://www.jiujitsugear.com/forum/ These days there are more tapes than you can shake a stick at but you might want to wait until you are a little more advanced. Learning fundamentals and feeling out how to work with someone else on the mat is the most important thing to worry about now. Theres plenty of time to learn that flying armbar As for teachers/organizations there are alot of good ones out there including ones without the name Gracie, despite what others might tell you. Just pop in a forum and start asking questions. You will find most people very helpfull and willing to bring new people into the sport. |

Philip - I am serious about my training (3 times a week) hence why when I practice at home I want to make sure I am doing it correctly. I wish there were some videos just going over the forms. I've taken many self defence courses but find what I am doing now giving me the confidence to fight off an attacker. Thanks again everyone |

Thanks Ernie! I won't put raw liver in your car now after all! Like I said I am really enjoying it - I find the classes tough but satisfying. It is a great workout! I wish my parents sent me here instead of ballet when I was a young pup. |

I have a second degree black belt in Kenpo. I was an instructor for 7 years. I also have a 1st degree black belt in Jiu-Jitsu. Basically, any type of training will give you and advantage over an untrained fighter. If you take Karate Lessons, or practice a martial art, do it for real. Anything else is just a false sense of security. YOU WILL FIGHT THE WAY YOU TRAIN. Don't get sloppy....if it's sole purpose is for a work out, enjoy...great cardio, great way to stretch and build muscles. 99% of all street fights end up on the ground. That's why it's good to supplement any training with a grappling art, such as Ju-Jitsu, Gracie, or any other art. ENJOY! |

Ernie that is great. I was looking for one too. I used to watch UFC. Royce did great. How far are you in the program after 5 years? Is it expensive? I am in TN and I don't think there is one locally. |

Nika There is a Rickson representative in Canada. His name is Slovko. I have train with him before, when he was down here at the school in So Cali. He is very good, and is a really nice guy. I'm not sure how close he is to you but here is his contact information. Ilic Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 385 Fairway Road South Suite A-123 Kitchener, Ontario N2C 2N9 (519)581-9723 Give him a call. If he is too far from were you are, I'm sure he knows who is in your area. |

Nika I have been studying Gracie Jiu Jitsu with Rickson Gracie (pronounced Hickson) for over five years now. I absolutely love it. It is THE best martial art in the world. I'm sure that there are some Gracie representatives in Canada. If you are familiar with the Ultimate Fighting Championship then you know who the Gracies are. If you aren't then go to your local video store and rent it. The type of Jiu Jitsu they teach is based on technique, timing, and leverage. You don't have to be strong, you don't have to be fast, and size doesn't matter. This is why it is the best martial art for women. It is based on what works in real life. The Father Helio Gracie was not a big man. He only weighted between 135 to 140 pounds and would defeat opponents that were 100 pounds heavier than he was. He still holds the record in the family, for the longest fight non stop, at over three hours. This was against a man that was 280 pounds, double his weight. Helio wasn't that strong so if it required too much strength he would changed and modify the technique. If he couldn't modify it to work, he would get rid of it. Then what they would do was challenge other martial art school to a no rules fight, to test how their new or modified techniques would work in a real situation. It is a grappling art. Which means it is on the ground, were 95% of all fights end up. If you don't know how to fight on the ground, and the fight goes there, you are gonna be in for some big trouble. As for my personal experience, I can tell you it works. After having been studying for only two years, I caught a guy inside my car trying to steal it. We started fighting and guess were the fight ended up? Thats right, on the ground. It was just like in class, but with street clothes on. I used what I had learned in class and finished the fight by choking the guy out cold. The fight did not even last two minutes. If I hadn't know Gracie Jiu Jitsu who knows what would have happened. All I can say is that I am glad I did. Try it out, you will be glad you did. You can go to http://www.rickson.com or just look up Gracie Jiu Jitsu on the net. There is loads of stuff about the Gracies. But check out Rickson's site first. |

3rd degree black belt in Sho Shu system. Last trained several years ago. Books and other methods just don't make the impact that a good instructor does. Sho Shu is, "way of the beast". Once did a demo with Chuck Norris. Don't ask how it came out. For a little guy, wow, he can pack a punch! Or rather, a punch, kick, backfist, kick, punch, spinning kick ... Oh, did I say that he can pack a punch? Over 20 years ago, actually, I was just the demo-dummy. Keep training, great cardio. My recommendation, don't get into the mystical elements of the form. Enjoy the physical parts. Some of the mental aspects as well as some of the more mystical elements are dangerous. Just a note to you folks who remember my license plate frame, don't mess with us Christians. Just because I'm one of those, doesn't make me a sissy. Gosh, a religious guy who can fight, loves his Ferraris and likes to laugh. What next? |
