the clk55 is about to get a styling change as well, so no real gain there. otherwise, i have had an m5 and its just about the best 4door/4seater in the world. hurry up and get this model before bangle screws up the next generation....

Wow, thanks all!! So it's pretty much unanimous among you... M5! My gut tells me M5, and usually it's good to stick with instincts.

Kenny, I've driven the M3 and while I just love it's looks and performance, the ride is a bit harsh, and the noise level is a bit high, for a daily D. Otherwise that would be my choice, no brainer.

I was already about 75% sure the M5 was my choice when I made the original post, but wanted to keep it a little unbiased just to see what everyone's replies would be. Glad to hear most everyone agrees with me!!

Thanks to all for your thoughts and feedback....

Jay, you mentioned that you like the Mercedes because its two seats, the styling is not going to be replaced in a year or two and it was a few thousand cheaper- for those reasons, why not get the new E46 M3- just as fast as the M5, 5 seats (becuase you rarely have someone in the back)- a new car warranty, lighter then the M5 (I believe) and with a few thousand dollars, the same power.

You can find the BMW for cheaper - the m5 is one of *the* best cars on the market today. Subtle, solid, power, chassis control to die for (feels like it's 400lbs lighter), comfortable, seats 4, and functions brilliantly as a daily driver.

THe CLK's tranny sucks, the steering feel is about as responsive as a soggy blanket, and the aesthetics ... well, that's subjective.

If I was commuting in a high traffic area and didn't need to carry people in the back hardly ever, my pick would be the CLK55. To me, the CLK is a good size for a personal commuter car, gives more performance than you can use on a daily basis, and the automatic is pretty good as far as automatics go. If my job involved driving clients around and didn't have a lot of stop and go, well yeah the M5 is near impossible to beat.

Enjoy whichever you decide works best for you! :-)

M5

The AMG is a great car, but after three minutes driving that, you would of wished you had a 6 speed.

Last year with the BMWCCA I was an instructor for a student that had an M5. All I can say is that I was totally impressed with the way it handled at Road Atlanta. Great brakes, great acceleration, great handling (as far as I could tell with a novice driver at the wheel).

And I am a Mercedes person.

Hello everyone... time to buy a new daily driver, and I've been laboring through this decision for the last few weeks and still don't have an answer. Figured maybe some people on this board could help with some advice based upon your own experiences...

When it comes to purchasing a new daily D, I always buy something a year or two old, with under 10k miles on it, so I can save some depreciation. So I'm looking at either a 2001 Carbon Black BMW M5, or a 2001 Silver Mercedes CLK 55 AMG. Both cars have around 7k miles, and the BMW can be had for around $62k, and the Mercedes can be had for around $54k.

Here's how I look at the strong and weak points of each car.

With the M5, I like a six speed over an auto tranny, I like that it has more hp than the Benz, I like the fit and finish, I like the handling. What I don't like is that I have to pay a little more for the M5 than the CLK, and that it will be completely redone in a couple years, meaning its value will soon be taking a big hit.

With the CLK55, I think the lines of the car are just beautiful, and I like that it has two doors instead of four, since I rarely have rear seat passengers (but I need a car with a back seat), again I like the build quality, and I think the Benz Starmark warranty is probably pretty good. I also like that it costs a little less and I think it's pretty good bang for the buck. But I don't like that it has less hp (342 hp) versus the M5, and I think it needs meatier rear tires, as every time I drive one, it just burns the tires, and I don't think it handles as well as the M5. Also the seat bolsters are kind of weird and require lots of tinkering to get just right.

So which way would you guys go? Anyone had an experiences with either car that you'd like to share? Many thanks...
