Tim black bears USUALLY run away from people. They hear/smell you coming long before you are near them. A lot of times if you are hiking in the woods a bear will sense you coming and go up a tree and watch you go by. As an example I spend a lot of time in the forest and I have never seen a bear as I'm sure they take off before I can see them however like any animal they can be aggressive at times and I never forget that! I have been told by the old-timers up here that the best thing to do if you come face to face with a bear is to remain completely still, if you run it WILL chase you.

The 22 is mostly for making tin cans look like swiss cheese. Im not really afraid of black bears though. I always thought they were afraid of people (is this true?), so when i walk in the woods i dont carry anything. I guess from what robert says, maybe they arent as afraid of people as i thought.

Unfortunately the bears never came out of the woods so I didn't get to see them. Tim, yes I have seen a couple of mooose. Saw one right in the middle of the road one summer evening and at a trailhead while I was heading out mountain biking 2 moose came out of the woods. This winter while snowmobiling with friends I was leading and I came to the end of the trail and was waiting for my friends who were usually about 5 minutes behind. After waiting for 20 minutes I set out to find them and they pulled up. They had came around a corner and there in the trail was Momma moose and baby Moose! My friends had to come to a complete stop and my buddy told me he was looking for a tree to climb! This was in Glastonbury right next to Woodford. Unfortunately I still haven't seen a bear.

J/K. There are lots of bears and even MOOSE down trhe road from you where my grandparents live on the top of prospect mountain. Ive never seen either in person, but i have seen moose tracks in the mud around the lake at my grandfathers hunting camp where i stay for weekends over the summer, about 2 miles from the highway. you ever seen a moose? i hear they are enormous and are a real sight to see.
DrS, a 30-06 at the least?! is a bears' skin that tough?? And to think all i keep at the camp when i'm there is a .22.

I wrestled a 500 pounder at a sport show once. You would get $10,000 if you pinned the bastard. My plan was to "shock and awe" by rolling him over and cornholing him, then while he was still in shock, pin his ass down. It didn't go as planned.

Make some noise it what I said. If you are actually going to shoot the bear. I would recomend a 30-06 at the least.

We hunted them with 45-70's which is a HUGE weapon!!

Dr.

If it's a grizzly you better make sure you have the right caliber.

best bet is just to make some noise, and not piss em off too much. Run downhill iff you have to, bear have much shortr front legs and are slower going that way.

Jim that movie was The Great Outdoors and yes it was very funny. Those would of been grizzly's out in Alaska very aggressive as opposed to the black/brown bears we have here. They haven't appeared yet.....

I've seen them numerous times camping.

The funniest time (usually bear sightings are not too funny) was when we were car camping and somebody left out a full case of sodas. I was sleeping about 15 feet from the sodas and woke up to a bear systematically drinking every soday by opening them with his/her teeth. It was quite impressive.

They can smell sugar for miles it seems. Once in the eastern sierras, somebody (me) left some toothpaste out: a bear came around our camp which was in the middle of nowhere and ate it. I didn't know, but toothpase has sugar.

If you see them, take a picture. That would be cool.

did you ever see that movie with John Candy and Dan Akroyd where he shoots the bear in teh butt with a shotgun and it blows the fur off? Very funny! Big bear...big bear....

I was in Alaska fishing and a bear ripped the door off our helicopter overnight. The pilot was pissed and he chased him down and tried to shoot him, but the bear went up a tree and he lost him. Ex Vietnam pilot so flying treetop level down the river was quite thrilling!

Well I just got woken up by the sounds of multiple bears in my yard. I have never seen one close up and hope to tonight (from the safety of inside my house!) They hoot sounding like owls at the beginning but ending the hoot in more of a growl. They are right in the trees about 30 yards from my house we will see if they pop out!
