Guess what? They found a leak in the radiator. They said that it was a common problem. They pressure tested the car and found something was leaking. My car is going to be in the shop for a few more days. That was the bad news...the good news is that its still under warranty.

Lung,

Congratulations on the move to Maserati, but you can't tell me you're not going to miss the TR someday. Ever since you and I parked near that Maserati at last year's Malaysian GP, I have been very interested and am close to ordering one "for my wife." Great to see your pictures and if I get one, I'll send you some also.

Did you go to the race last week? My wife and I are planning to get there next year and hope to see you again. My regards to you and your family.

Best regards,
Bob

Just sent the car in for various "repairs". Fixing the following....
1. V-kool - heat reducing film (tint) that reduces heat.
2. Rattling noise coming from glove compartment.
3. Removing the Tubi and replacing original.
4. Installing Philips Xenon lights.
5. Replacing all the plasic parts that have melted i.e. buttons on dash, ash tray, center vent, door handle, etc. The humidity here kills all the plastics.
6. Change oil pressure sensor.
7. Install a relay to open trunk when engine still running.
8. Servicing...change engine oil, plugs, filter, etc.

Will let you guys know how things turn out.

Interesting point Jim...will check it out when I send the car for service in April.

I have just "dynamat" my car....basically sound proofing the car. 8 pieces of Xtreme Dynamat for the doors and rear seats. 3 pieces of Xtreme Liner for the floor boards. 2 rolls of Tacmat for the door panels. The car sounds like a Lexus for the inside now :-)

The purpose for the sound proofing is for my sound system. I am a bit of a car audio freak.

With the sound proofing material...the car does feel heavier.

I think the noise you sometimes hear is caused by a sensor sensing low fuel PSI and causing the pump to run at a higher PSI. The fuel pump is a 2 stage pump. You may have a faulty sensor. This shouldn't occur except perhaps at very low fuel levels.

Eric,
I cannot comment on servicing as its too new. However, I am sure its going to be lots cheaper than a Ferrari. I compare it to my Testa and the build quality is so much better. But then again there is a 10 year diffence in age and technology. I would imagine that our cost would be the expandables and labor for the 1st 3 years. I think the car is too new to judge it past 3 years.
Like must things, if you don't use it, it will start breaking down. I had my Testa as my daily diver and it hardly ever gave me any problems. So your wife should use it as often as possible.

Driving to Singapore from KL Malaysia tomorrow...another 350km drive. Will update you all later.

Lung...LOL...that's good news! Never even thought to take a look in the trunk area. You guys have really started something now -- my wife keeps going to the Maser. website and playing around with color / option choices. Looks like this could be inevitable.

Just out of curiosity, how's the maintenance cost for routine / minor / major on these cars -- comparable to Ferrari perhaps -- assuming they have maybe a 3 year warranty? Just thinking long term, as this would probably not be her daily driver, but she would most likely keep the car beyond the warranty period. Thanks.

Eric,
fogot to tell you that the truck space is big enough for a full golf bag. I am not talking about the half set bag but a full set with 45inch driver and 14 other clubs (totally illegal to have so many clubs during competition though).

I had a tubi on my 328 and my Testa, and I loved the sound on both...but somehow it doesn't sound rite on the 3200.

I will try to record the sound files b4 I take the exhaust out.

Who knows...might just sell them on ebay..hahaha

Thanks Lung. I guess you get to keep the exhaust in case you change your mind or are you going to sell it? I know what you mean - several years ago I drove a 300ZX with a loud exhaust, it just gave me a headache!

Alex,
Not sure If I like the Tubi...after about 2 weeks of driving, its a bit too "loud" for me. Its not so much the loudness but its the hum which I mentioned before that come on at low rev. I will be changing it back to stock shortly. Of course I could regret it.

Child car seats in the rear...wow, that is rather roomy! We did notice that the rear seating area was much more accomodating than the Porsche after seeing a few 911's and 930's at the show the next day. Height shouldn't be a problem either, as she is rather petite (under 5'0") and I'm only 5'9". We both fit very comfortably in the 308.

WHAT??? NO CUPHOLDERS?!! DES, did you hear that? Oh well, if she's anything like me, she'd be spilling drinks all over the interior anyhow.

LOL...so true about putting away your daughter in a convent! My daughter is rapidly approaching 12, and what an eye-opener it has been for us. By the way, just showed this thread to my wife -- and, not only did she enjoy the pics of your (and others) new Maser., but she also thought your daughter was absolutely adorable (as did I).

I was amazed at the number of options available for these cars on the Maserati website. They must be great cars for you guys to trade in your TR's for them -- as for myself, I want a TR...but it's the wife's turn next .

Eric, Let me tell you the 2+2 is great. I can put my kids and their child seats in. There is more room in the back than in a Porsche. Can seat adults comfortably (no taller than 5' 11" in my opinion). BUT!!!
not sure about the new Coupe but my 3200 DOES NOT COME WITH CUP HOLDERS!!! That could be a deal breaker for your wife.

Jim, can you confirm on the cup holders on the 4200?
BTW Jim, when my girl gets to be a teenager I'll be putting her in a convent high in the mountains of Tibet.

Will be looking forward to hearing your experiences with the Maser. tour!

With regards to a future purchase -- we've decided that my lovely wife will be receiving the next sports car purchase. She would be content with a new Vette, but I've been trying hard to expose her to other "exotic" offerings such as the Mondial, 911's, the new Maserati's, etc. Her main concern is ease of driving, i.e. F1, Tiptronic, or automatic transmission; plus the usual appointments that I could care less about. My main concern is the extra seating capacity (for the two children), which the Vette does not offer; but it will be "her" car, so ultimately it's her decision. She still has the minivan for the kids .

As it turned out, the dealership had several Maseratis that caught her attention quickly. The seating capacity for 4, the luxurious appointments, the vast array of options, the design of the car, and the car's size was just right for her. I personally liked the business side of things under the hood. Not to mention the price -- very reasonable I thought, especially after just climbing out of a '90 TR that was being offered for nearly as much $$$ as the Maseratis.

As it stands, we're looking at purchasing in the next 2 or 3 years, so I guess time will tell. Thank you for posting your thoughts about your new Maser. along with the pics -- I'll be showing them to her tonight!

does anyone know why the exhaust sounds louder after driving for a while (20mins)? It sounds quieter when it is cold. hmmmmm

Sound files, sound files, ok will try to do something. Got to find a mic and convert it into a sound file....Alex, give me a week to work this out.

Forgot to mention that the loud hum sound has been getting softer over the last 2 days. I think it may be the tubi settling in.

I enjoy driving it around town in SPORTS mode. Very nice and nippy. BTW the hum also dissapears in Sports mode...gotta be back-pressure.

Cheng, I will definately take your advice on the ASR. Even my mechanics says "never drive with the ASR off" (excluding track days of course).

Congrats on the new Maser Lung! The twin-turbo is a great fun but be very careful if you switch the ASR off in rain or slippering road as James said.
It is totally different from the normally aspired engine.

So spend some time to get used to the Turbos.

Have fun!

Ok guys here's the 2 week scoop....photos attached.
1. Installed Tubi exhaust. They are about 30% louder. It has smoothen out the acceleration curve. It use to be very jerky when I tap the throttle, now its smooth. It is awasome above 3000RPM or above 150KMPH, the car just sails. However, having said that at 2000 to 2700 revs, there is a HUGE Hum or low pitch "noise", sound, reverberation, from the exhausts. Its like it makes this sound when it doesn't have sufficent back pressure. Its really bad in town driving...around 40-50kmph.

I drove it again just now and its like the sound "improved"???. I think the overall sound level decreased. Like the more you drive it, the more it gets coated with carbon and oils and the new metalic sound gets dull. It happened with my previous tubi on the testa. I think thats whats happening now.

2. I find the trunk release a real pain. One has to switch the engine off before operating the remote truck release. I am getting the agent to do a bypass.

3. Oil pressure sensor is not reading rite. Always at 5 bar and can suddenly drop to zero. Agent said its a common problem, they are going to change the sensor. Still under warranty.

4. Will be installing Xenon lights on the car.

5. Already changed to Pzero tires as previously mentioned....great ride.

Photos attached. 1.The Jim Glickenhaus pose. 2.Interior cabin color 3.Front with my little girl. 4.Tubi exhaust.

Thats it for now....

Glad your enjoying it! I'd be interested to know if you can tell the difference between the sport mode being on or off on a 3200. I could tell the difference on a 4200 but it makes very little difference on my 3200.

I'd also agree with James about the ASR. I had a lot of fun with it off in recent snow but with the turbo engines the power sometimes comes in when your not expecting it (downshifting for a turn) and with ASR off you'll have to be quick to catch the spin.

The noise you heard is the fuel pressure relief valve. No problem. The ASR can be switched off but be carefull esp. in the rain. Another noise you will hear is the popping/ticking of the cats when you shut down. This is normal.
Enjoy!

ok guys...sorry still no photos...coming soon.
However, just drove from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur this afternoon, 350km. Unfortunately it was raining most of the way. I managed to get the car up to 200kmh on certain stretches. Very stable, more stable than the Testa. Less nervous. The car felt very comfortable at speed and I could tell that it could go the full 150MPH without problem.

1st impressions...

When I picked up the car on Friday night I felt the ride was a little hard/harsh. On Sat when I checked the tires, I found out they were the originals, made in 1999. I changed them immediately. I am now running Pzero Rossos on the car. A much better ride now.

The ASR comes on too early for my liking. I could switch it to Sports mode and it might help. What do you guys think?

After one of the many drive on Sat and switching off the engine I heard a buzzing sound coming from the rear. The sound would last for about 10 seconds, disappear, then come on again after 20+ seconds. This is with the engine off. I called the mechanic, they told me it was the fuel pressure valve releasing gas buildup. Anyone had this experience?

Congrats on the car. My wife is bugging me to purchase a 4200 here in Dallas. Personally I am into old Maserati & Ferrari GT class cars. But my wife wants a car with an automatic roof that she can put her golf clubs in. She is even finally willing to sell her 86 Maserati Spyder if I get her a new one.

Yes 4200. I find this to be the best version of the F1.
Very smooth. In sport mode it double clutches when downshifting. It also has a special low range for stop and go driving and parking. Downshift into 1 0r R and downshift again. 1 or R will flash and clutch will be smoother. If your friends F1 is harsh I bet something's wrong. This box also has a setting for "ICE" and rain. Remaps shifts to prevent wheelspin, along with traction control. This seems to work well in the snow.
Mine is racing blue with light tan and darker tan with dark wood interior including headliner. It has Michlen Tires with a high speed Pilot V tread.

Your is the 4200GT Cambiocorsa rite? The owner of the car I am buying from upgraded to the 4200, he doesn't like it coz he finds the shifting a bit jerky...is this true? I thot the F1 gearbox is now in its 4th generation...should be smooth.

When u snap the photos, snap the interior too. BTW what color is your car inside and out? What tires u using? Pzeros?

Yes I'm in the US. I've seen 3200's but not in the US. There is a Maserati Factory site www.maserati.com but the chat, as is the chat on the Ferrari Factory site, is very limited. The Maserati site does have some interesting photos and articles. Your chat is always welcome here.

I test drove it again today. I also closed the deal on it. Let me say the Mase is like a mini pocket rocket. Its very fast, extremely tight around corners, and stable at high speeds. Its feels like a small version of a 456. BTW did you know that u can put 550 brake pads on the Mase? In fact it has a Ferrari smell too.

I am taking delivery next Sat.

BTW I am also thinking of putting a Tubi exhaust in it. One of friends has already done it and it doesn't really affect the cabin noise.

I am swapping my 1990 Testa for a 2001 Mase. Please don't say I am going to regret it coz all my friends have told me that. I am doing the deal coz its a structured transaction I couldn't refuse i.e. good selling price for my Testa and good buying price for the Mase. Any thoughts on this Mase?
