Congrats, sounds like a cool night. I did a similar thing in front of a group of about 40 friends and a new years party. a friend was trying to get everyone to be quiet so my loud mouth wife(to be) piped up saying "Everyone be quiet, Chris has something he wants to say", then he said "actually Jim has something to say" so then I went in to my speech and proposed. She was crying and stuff. great memories.

Sorry this took too long, but my grandmother is very sick and I had to go visit her. The night was perfect. I had bought some flowers in a vase to have them put on the table before we got there and she was very surprised. After dinner the waitress brought out a crystal platter with red rose peddles out and placed it in front of her. A waiter came over and said you are on, took my chair, and got on my knees. There were about 50 or 60 people around listening and watching. I asked her to marry me and she was crying and I was crying, it was an emotional time. After I asked her, the place went wild, screaming and whistling, people coming over and congratulating me. Ordered a bottle of champagne and some dessert. The service was absolutely amazing!!! I recommend this to anyone (Oceanaire)

...one more day. I just went and bought an arrangement of her favorite flowers to have the restaurant put on the table and some rose peddles to be put on the plate w/ the ring box (They will bring this when I order the champagne and surprise her). Nervous as hell!!

Anyone else have exciting plans for Valentines?

sorry guys, I have limit access to a computer, not tying to ignore you-miss being on here. Update though, my ring was not ready, so I had to changed to Valentines day. She hinted for a good seafood restaurant (my job to listen), so I made reservations at The Oceanaire at the Westin. I ate there for lunch and the service and food was awesome!

I promise I will let you know what happens...BobD your right about not seeing sunlight :-)

Thank you to everyone for helping me on this very important day!!!

Of those you named, Pappas Bros. is the best *and* the more romatic... ask to be seated in one of the smaller rooms... or my favorite, the room with all the wine on the walls (not in the cellar though... unless you're ready to pay a premium).

I'd rate III Forks above Chamberlain's, and Chamberlain's above the other two.

Debatably, a step up from Pappas Bros would be Al Biernat's... but its more the "in crowd" atmosphere... Pappas Bros might be more the romantic atmosphere you're looking for.

The Mansion will be nice for desert... but I find it a bit overrated. As an alternative, Nana's is very dramatic (27th floor panaromic of Dallas skyline), very romantic (violins playing on weekends or jazz playing in the bar), awesome food and service... but staggering prices.

Ok, we forgot about the Capitol Grille. My 2nd favorite Dallas steakhouse. I went last night before the symphony and had little time. I forgot how much I like that place.

Went to "The Keg" today and it was really good for those 2nd tier steak houses. I actually love the prime rib at Steak and Ale. Had ceaser salid, prime rib, small lobster tail, two glasses of a Pinot Noir, and a fudge ice cream desert for about $45.

I would personally lean towards Bobs. But I still like Kirby's on lower Greenville. Although it's not the same as the original (many hot teenage dates there.. many.. years ago) It is still quite good and a nice quite steak house.

Since you've got a few weeks, why don't you pick a Friday or Saturday nite, ditch the (hopefully) bride-to-be and do a quick scouting trip at the appropriate time of evening and swing by each of the candidate locales ? One can deduce a LOT about a joint in a few secs/minutes just walking in/out/around a bit.
If quizzed by receptionist, say you're looking for someone, or fess up & explain you're doing a quick scouting trip...

I'll throw in my experiences too...

Bob's - decent food, but like BobD I didn't appreciate the TVs in the corners playing sports channels. Not at all a romantic sort of place.

Del Friscos - I only went there one time and didn't have a good experience. One of the ladies with us is a vegetarian and ordered a vegetable plate that came out rather nasty because of all the oil/grease on it. Plus, the waiter wasn't very curteous to her. The atmosphere seems to be deteriorating too - we sat upstairs near one of the walls; the wood was all scratched up and the carpet seemed rather worn. It looked pretty bad, really.

Pappas Brothers - great place, I've enjoyed all of my visits there. The atmosphere is great, but not all that intimate. Depending on where you sit, it can definitely be very loud - we had to ask for a quieter table the most recent time. Fortunately, they have such in rooms further back away from the kitchen.

Nick & Sam's - Great food and atmosphere. Great place to take a date. The parking lot is tiny and as far as I know they only do valet - I wish I paid more attention to the odometer before I went in, because I think my car had 10 more miles on it when we left. But I'd go back.

Morton's - great food again, if your fiance doesn't mind seeing raw meet presented at the table. Great dark and quiet atmosphere.

I guess my first choice would be N&S's, then Morton's.

Marcus, we've been to all of them and they're all different. I proposed to my wife 13 years ago at the original Del Frisco's which is now Bob's on Lemmon Ave. I always liked that place because it was small and had a nice ambiance. But last time we were at Bob's for my wife's birthday, they had televisions on.... like it was a sports bar (I liked it but my wife wasn't too high on the idea). Maybe we just ended up in the wrong area of the restaurant.

The new Del Frisco targets business people... III Forks is too big... Papa's is excellent but can be a little loud & pricey... Chamberlains is so-so IMO.

Consider Nick & Sams on Maple. It's a great place with a great wine selection.... cool place! While you're waiting for your table, you can try a flight of wine. And you'll be relatively close to the Mansion for desert.

Wherever you end up you'll have fun. Good luck and congrats!!!

I'd agree that you're not going to get a reservation at this point. In my opinion, Bob's is the only steakhouse in Dallas, all the others are 2nd best. D Magazine agrees with me! Bob's also has 2 locations so your chances for a reservation might be better.

I proposed around Christmas and wrestled with giving the ring to some bozo I didn't know. I wound up keeping it and during dessert, I asked her what she wanted for Christmas. When she answered, I said, "well, I was thinking about giving you this instead" or something along those lines.

Good luck!

Well for the restaurant you need reservations and with xmas etc I bet they are booked. The bar does not require reservations. Call and ask and tell them what you are trying to do. Surely they can squeeze 2 people in for a quick dessert and ring.

I don't know anyone there. sorry. What would be cool is if Dean Fearing would bring out the ring. He comes by each table if he is in that night.

I am doing this on a Saturday. Dinner will be around 7-7:30, so I guess dessert at 9:30-10. Should I go to the restaurant Jim? Do you know anyone that works there? I am trying to do this ring presentation there-so I am a little nervous about handing over this thing, I guess I can talk to the restuarant manager???

rooms are bout $385. I went for dinner and room for my anniversary this year and total bill was $850 i think. Pretty pricey to sleep, but service is kick ass. Be sure to tell them why you are coming if you do get a room etc. They asked me and everything had "congrats on your anniversary" written in chocolate etc.

I have not been to any of those steak houses. However i have been to the Mansion a few times. The creme brulet is awesome! Dessert in the bar or the restaurant? The bar gets pretty packed and smokey later in the evening just fyi. Also depends on what night you are going.

congrats and good luck!

Thank you Dave! That was a nice comment! Mona Liza has been there for me through hell and back-twice, so I owe it to her to do all this. The hard part is keeping it a secret. I was thinking of getting a room at the Mansion to top it off after dessert and champagne.

Wow! Marcus, you are quite the admirable romantic!!! Good thinking!!

My wife & I have been to Chamberlains, Bob's, and Del Friscos. Of the three, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Chamberlain's. IMO, it is, by far, the best of the bunch, without the phony thousand dollar millionaires that populate Del's, and with a nicer ambiance than Bob's.

Nice touch for the ring at dessert...Definitely!!

I am going to take my Fiance to a nice steak dinner and these are the choices; Pappas Brothers, Bob's, Del Friscos, and Chamberlains. This is for our 4 year anniversary and when I will give her the ring combo night. After dinner I am going to take her to the Mansion for dessert and Champagne and have the manager bring the ring out on a plate with rose pedals at the same time. I am trying to make this as romantic as I can. Have any of you been to any of these steak houses?

Any help would be much appreciated!
