UPDATE!!!

The McLaren has a main shaft broken in the gearbox and is having to have a new one made. It is not drivable now and he does not know when he is going to get it going again. He says he will probably sell it when it is back together since he has taken delivery of his new Enzo.

He has also gone back up to Aspen and now says he will probably stay there until November. I spoke to him about the road trip and he said if the McLaren were running he would love to join for just the weekend.

Let's hope that when he gets it back together he will decide to keep it after driving it again. He put it up for sale one other time but withdrew it after deciding he liked it so much and felt there was nothing to replace it with. Now he has the Enzo, so............

Let me be explicit: I would show up in New Jersey on my wedding day for the opportunity to ride in a McLaren F1. Whatever works for your friend works for me.

I would imagine that if this trip were to make and a block of rooms could be booked at the Hilton or one of the other "nicer" hotels in Midland, they would probably set up a big screen in one of the meeting rooms to view the USGP.

Anyway, it was just a suggestion. I will pass along his schedule as soon as I know it and will then see if anyone is interested in going out.

Midland is also the home to Jim Hall and his Chaparrals, Clayton (Claytie) Williams of the "run for governor" fiasco, The Permian Basin Oil Museum (which is really quite interesting and professionally done), and a few more interesting things to see. Oh, and only 30 miles away in Odessa is the BMW dealership that I managed for six years. I think it is still there, but I have been gone for ten years now so who knows?

James,

Good to hear that. The F1 is my favorite road car, so I'm glad an ugly domestic hasn't topped it!

I had a GSXR-1100 that was running out of road.
Nowhere near that fast though.

Evan,

The McLaren tested out last year at 244 mph. It was not this one but I believe one tested in Europe. It was the first time one has been able to be tested to a true top speed. The times this one was tested, the driver had to lift before top speed was reached because he was running out of road.

We tested at 2.8 0-60
6.1 0-100

Dave,

He lives in Midland full-time and Aspen part-time. He is a real cool guy. Around 50, rides dirtbikes, races pro-stock, drives fast cars, flies helicopters and has fun doing it all. You would like him but never suspect that he has all he does. He certainly puts on no airs.

I will talk with him tonight or tomorrow morning. I will let you know what his schedule is allowing.

James, I'll certainly make the trip if the offer remains. Come to think of it, I haven't been to an airshow since I was a kid.

BTW, I was a little dissapointed with Road and Track in their issue about the Saleen S7. They claimed the McLaren has lost the supercar throne to the new S7, based on its' (slightly) better acceleration and top end tests. What got me was the fact that the F1 was tested during July in 110F heat, but the S7 was done with temp around 60-65F. Quite a difference in conditions. I think they're biased in favor of American cars.

I'm giving a speech in Dallas on that Friday 9/26. So heading from there to Midland (Midland? Of all the gin joints in the world, this guy has to live in Midland? Just kidding.)sounds good. I'm in.

I just heard from my friend with the McLaren and he is back in his office now. He just took delivery of a new Enzo on the 5th of July.

I am going to speak to him tonight about the possibility of him getting together with the Dallas FCA and Fchat members this fall. His suggestion was on the 27th and 28th of September, the Commemorative Air Force is putting on their annual show and fly-in in Midland/Odessa. It is the largest gathering of WW2 aircraft in the world and they put on a heck of a recreation of the airwars. It could make for an interesting trip. www.commemorativeairforce.com

Should I go ahead and ask about his schedule and if he could get together with all of you guys. I would love to go along too. Let me know what you think.
