I'm with you Rob, I've been wondering how I could get something like that of my own. Maybe we all pitch in and buy 10 acres of flat pasture land somewhere.

Thanks for the pic, Tillman. I SEE what you mean.

After taking care of the next house & move, I will seriously put my thought on this. We have till December, anyway.

Thanks for the tip Rob.

Yoshi, unless you hit someone on the way there, I can't see how you could total a car on this. There's just cones and a parking lot mostly. See below. Maybe you can buy a cheap Eclipse or RX7 or something similar and then sell it after the class? Just random thoughts :-)

Yea, reminder, don't ask your insurance company "if they would cover your car at one of these events" like the nice customer I was. Not good to be the nice guy.

Tillman,
I totally agree with you, but envy your guts. I cannot afford to total or near-total any car, as I am high risk driver by insurance companies right now. Totalled 3 cars in 1 year, and got cancelled my policy by State Farm...... Now you know why I want to learn to drive properly, right?

Ron R,
Thanks for info., but college chicks are not nighttime entertainment for me (smile). I am bashful around ladies.......

I don't know about night life, but there may still be a Whataburger with a 60's era Vette sitting in the middle of it.

Plus........College Chicks!!!

Yoshi,

Basically, I decided that I only live once, so I might as well have fun. The instructor was worried about "$200K cars", mine's only worth 40 :-)

Seriously, I just think the class will be more worthwhile in a car that handles, rather than a Dodge Ram.

Tillman, I am right now in the middle of "will" or "will not".... (sorry I didn't see this post till today!)

Why did you decided to take 328 even though many advises you shouldn't. (not in exact words)?

Ron H, Is there any night time entertainment in Kilgore or near that area? Where did you stay while you were there?

Well, I'm registered and I'm going to take the Fcar. Next is hotel reservations. The academy cannot recommend any particular hotel, so is anyone familiar with Kilgore? :-)

I think it's pretty close to 2 hours from Dallas. I used to drive out there a lot to get to Oak Hill raceway in Henderson (south of Kilgore). It's an easy drive down 20.

How will you guys intend to get to Kilgore? I assumed it is about 1 hour drive, but more like 4 hours. Now I am worried!!!!! I don't even have a right car, too. Rob suggested for rental car, but if I damaged, they will charge it to my card. I wish they would have a car for students, maybe used police car or something.......

Cones will mostly just scuff. They've broken my foglights on the BMW a couple times and chipped paint on the SRX7. The one time I didn autocross the 328 there weren't any problems and I did kill a cone.

What he's saying is that you are very likely going to hit the cones at some point. The cones are soft plastic, but there's always the possibility of marks. I can't see those cones causing any permanent damage, but maybe I'm wrong.

Scuff marks? I have no cars I'm willing to risk scuff marks on. Rob, can I borrow #6? :-)

I received an email back from the instructor. He strongly recommends not bringing the Fcars.

"I can almost guarantee you (and I say that without any hesitation!) some scuff marks on whatever you bring out."

I was looking forward to running the 328 out there, but now y'all get to see my Dodge Ram fishtailing around the course :-)

Here's the signup info:

"If you want to register, simply send an e-mail to [email protected] and let her know that you want to register for the Practical Driver Improvement class on December 6-7. She'll need your name, your e-mail address, and a daytime phone number. Other than that, simply show up on Saturday, December 6 at about 0815 or so."

He also wanted me to emphasize that this is a course designed to improve street driving skills, not a race driving course.

Still sounds like fun to me!

I would be interested to. I would probably do it in the FIAT not the Ferrari or the Maserati. The FIAT simply handles autocross better oh yah and much cheaper to fix..

If you're going to ruin a set of tires, I would recomend the Evolution Autocross School. These schools are led by national champion autocrossers. They will have an autocross course set up with a segment timing system. You'll drive the course and compare it to a couple runs the instructor did in your car. You can see which segments you need to work on. Segments are broken up by various skills required.

It may be a little more expensive, but it's closer and you can make up the difference right there. I think there's one coming up around Dallas October 19th.

$20 a day rental car!

Trust me, over a weekend you'll burn through a set of tires if you're driving it hard. Street tires chunk when overheated and ruin easily. Race tires actually last longer under these conditions as they're soft and don't chunk.

I'm planning on doing it in the Ferrari. Tires are cheap (at least, if you're used to buying truck tires, tires are cheap if they're under $300) and the whole point of this car is to learn how to drive it well.

The nice thing is that it's a single-car track, so you only have to worry about cones :-)

Jim, Kilgore is in deep east Texas on highway 259. It's a relatively large town for the area, but it's still small. Home of the world-famous Kilgore Rangerettes :-)

I'll get in touch with the instructors and find out how to sign up and where they recommend us stay.

I wouldn't do it in a Ferrari. I don't even like to autocross the Ferrari. Mainly because of tires and also excessive side loads have been known to break stub axles on the 308/328. I would do it in your wifes car and only if she needs new tires anyway.

Um, where the heck is Kilgore? I'd love to do a driving school, but don't really want to do it in the Ferrari. Is that wrong?

As I mentioned earlier, I ran into the VP of the Metroplex MINI club today. One of the things they do is participate in a driving school down in Kilgore.

It's acutally a cop training course that is opened on the weekend for civilians. 2 days of training for (get this) $50!

The next one is in December, and they'd love to have us come out in the Fcars. I know I'm going to get my rear kicked by a MINI, but still it looks like a bargain. URL is below:

http://www.kilgore.cc.tx.us/etpa/pdi.htm

Reviews of the recent course are here:

http://www.metroplexmini.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1398

Anyone interested?
