I have had a ongoing CEL problem (P0300) and a hunting idle which points to a vacuum leak. Since I removed the injectors for cleaning and calibration (amongst many other things), I was able to get a closer look at the intake runners gaskets. While I couldn't identify any obvious leaks, there was some oil around the runner to Cyl 4. I decided to pull the intake and see if any gaskets had been sucked in as other owners have experienced... well the verdict after a couple hours of fun is pictured below.

Based on what others have reported, it would appear that if the gaskets get oily there is an increased risk of them failing, I am curious how often this happens...

Frenchie- I do not know about the CS, but the Maranello intake manifolds have a way of working loose and need to be retorqued periodically. Wonder if it was a combination of loose and wet?

If the gasket breaks down from oil or some other contamination, I can see this happening. It's just about impossible to do it to a gasket in good shape that is properly tightened. But, with a damaged gasket and that much vaccum, I can see it.

That leak must have been there for some time. I would think it take a while for the gasket to get completely saturated through and break down.

Luckily you found it and the damage is non-existent.

I was thinking the same thing. But, he didn't mention them being loose. If the paper absorbs the oil, I can see it breaking down just like it would in water.

You can see pretty clearly from the photo that the valve cover gasket was leaking right on top of the intake gasket.

The intake was tight, as for the oil, I do not believe valve cover gasket is seeping oil as the major was done 1000 miles ago (could have been before - though gravity would prevent extensive seepage). The other clue is a significant amount of oil in the manifold and the runners which could be from blow by (doubtful) or someone overfilling (common). BTW all the other runners looked dry from the outside, yet when I pulled the intake off, the gaskets were well impregnated with oil.

So I am guessing that over time oil finds it way down the runners, gets absorbed by the gasket which breaks them down to the point where they can get sucked in.... overfilling probably aggravates.

I'm not smart enough to understand why... but on the 575 (and I think the 458 Italia), those intake runner gaskets have switched from paper to aluminum.

p.s. the aluminum ones are also retroactive back into the 550 and forward to the 612
