I am looking to buy a Scud. What should I be looking for in this car......in terms of common problems. Thanks.
One problem is that they are really addicting to drive : ) On some of the cars the carbon fiber in the engine bay has a tendency to "discolor" but besides that I do not think there is anything major to look out for.... If your looking for a Scud we have 4 in inventory New, Used Ferrari F430 at CNC Motors Inc. Serving Ontario, CA
This ^^ On my 16M I had an evap leak which resulted in CEL. Took the dealership quite a while to track it down. I've got lots of new parts in the car now. Thankfully, it was all under warranty. I also had a weird crackling/hazing of my headlights too. The dealer hadn't seen this particular issue before and replaced both headlights under warranty. You don't want to replace these out of your pocket. The cost for the light assembly is beyond insane.
For fading out of the some carbon panels near silencer, there is a service campaign of Ferrari and they are being replaced free of charge (even the car is out of warranty). Just visit the official dealer. The headlights, yes sometimes clear polycarbonat coverings become cracked and hazed by itself. They will be replaced under warranty if the car has an extended warranty. Other issues are the same as 430, i.e. worn and rattling rear tie rods, suspension joınts... Good luck with your future Scu..
Little irritating warning P0445 - sometimes due to gas cap not on properly - lots of threads if you search on the error code
got it, the most annoying thing i found is the front suspension/sway bar link squeaking, esp after rain driving
Transmission failures http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/360-430/393759-new-scud-owner-have-problems-need-help.html OTOH they have a different exhaust header than the standard F430 so do not have that issue to dal with E-Diff failures http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/360-430/374428-e-diff-question.html
That one is more of a rarity rather than a common problem. Previous owner was driving around, and driving around hard, with clutch under 30%? for extended periods, which led to a compounded series of issues. Even Hondas die when not properly maintained =)
Scud is a solid car. Other than CF fading issues its perfect. The only problem is you cant stop driving it!
I have put 3000 miles on mine, last year, without a problem. It is a solid car with many great attributes. If your looking at a 430 or another car in this price range the scud has alot of extras that they do not have for just aliitle more money.
I would agree with Chip - the s*** eating grin is one of the only main problems. I didn't realize there was a recall campaign for the carbon that sat next to the exhaust...I'll get me some new airboxes it sounds like - but I just figured that was par for the course given that all carbon seems to go to crap after a while. (BTW the F1 issue was mine, and it's a care and knowing how to drive it to make it last kinda thing more than a common failure. I 'wish' the scud was made in a manual to avoid such pains in the ass...but every time I feel the superfast F1 shifting kick in, I giggle like a child and figure it's worth it )
it was on 18% when I got it. I will never let a Marelli robotic clutch go below 30. given that I can get 35-45k miles off of 70% of one of these clutches (from past experience), I am not too worried.
Holy 18? Well, whatever the case it's alive again at 100% and that's all that matters As for the carbon, ya if you have cube warranty left, it will be replaced under warranty. If not, you can either have it refinished at MaCarbon or the place in Georgia (forgot the name) to oem spec. Getting rid if the heat soaker of an exhaust will help prolong the longevity of the panels too, *hint*hint*
No cubey for me, but I am a huge fan of John at MACarbon after everything he did for my 996TT. (he is actually sending me a carbon rear diffuser right now (cause MTK shoulda had one on there already ;-)). Just sent you a PM about our pipes my friend.
That's not true. Carbon actually lasts well and doesn't discolor as long as it's made properly. The problem with the carbon that Ferrari used since the Enzo (not what they used on the F40, F50) is that they use a wet lay up with excessive gel coat and epoxy. It's not for function. It's purely for looks. If you look at true pre-preg carbon that's used on race cars and cars like the F40 and F50, it doesn't fade or discolor with normal use. But it looks dull and ho hum, not shiny and glass-like with an emphasis on the finish. In the industry, it's sometimes referred to as poser carbon and it actually uses a poor quality cf as well. If you want to protect that stuff, by the way, a product that you can use is called 303 Protectant. It provides UV protectant for CF and many hugh impact plastics that could break down from UV exposure.
So like the flat finish CF that is on my 1199 wont be affected the same way? Sounds like the protectant could be used on the rear grill and diffuser too, etc. in addition to the bits in the engine bay?
I haven't look at the carbon on Ducatis in a long time but last time I checked, everything other than the Corse bikes had crap carbon. It's been years, though. It might be improved now.
