How difficult is it to replace the cam seals? I see from this photo that the seal housings appear to be separate to the cam covers or does the cam cover fit over them. Is this an easy job during a belt change or do the cams have to come out? I guess to torque the cam pulley bolts the cams would have to be locked in place.
    Thanks

It's a lot of labor but I dont think it is rocket science. The dealer removes the airbox and engine compartment crossbrace and then whatever else is in the way and the covers to access them. I think you will be bent over a lot to do this work. Check my garage in the owners forum for a picture of what it looks like right after they bolt the covers back on!

Have done it before outside of the belt service. It is very easy with the belt service. I would change one at a time. Valve covers or cam caps do not need to be removed.

    1. Mark each Cam gear at the housings where the 4 10mm bolts are for the gears
..make sure you mark each point in 2 different locations for the Gear to the center hub where the camshaft comes through.
    2. remove the 4 10mm bolts one you have marked to cam gear. It is best to hold the cam gear with a vice grip on the lip or a larger slip joint plier.
    3. Slide the gear off the hub of the camshaft, this will fully expose the seal.
    4. use a seal removal tool or a slight hook tool to remove the seal. You can also loosen the 6 10mm nuts holding down the front bearing cap to release the tension on the seal.

    Reinstall,
*** MAKE SURE YOU APPLY A SMALL AMOUNT OF GREASE ON THE INNE RACE OF THE SEAL PRIOR TO INSTALL SO THE SEAL SURFACE IS NOT EFFECTED ON THE INITAL START***
1.line up seal so it is flush with the boar in the bearing cap face. Work the seal in gently from side to side until it is flush with the housing. A simple tool is to use a 1.5in PVC pipe cap as it is close to the size of the seal to tap it in without damage. Tighten bearing cap after each bank seals are installed.
    2. Reinstall gear to the prior marked reference.
    3. Replace the 3 other seals in the same manner.
    4. Reset the cams to their timing marks
    5. Index cams and install belt.

    I hope this helps,

    David

Thanks David. My tech said the leak was very small and could wait for the next belt service.
