Bigger Engines?

Big engines turning over slowly is good for both power and emissions--see LS1-LS7
High RPMs is bad for emissions due to cam overlap--thus the demise of the 458 engine.

 

Poorly written article. Running a small engine rich to reduce temperatures so use a bigger engine with the same performance envelope that will not output as much NOx.. I presume it applies to diesel engines only? Author isn't entirely clear on that. If diesel then it has no bearing on performance cars.

An entire page of text for one sentence at the end that sums up the entire article: "downsizing will mean you take a smaller engine and add an electric motor to it".

Flawed premise for years now: Assumes if you take a small engine and rev it to 8500 RPM to get performance X, the driver will only have to rev a bigger engine to 5500 RPM for the same performance.
When they rev the bigger engine to higher RPMS (as they will).. all output savings are lost. Thus.. the smaller engine push.

 

Why?

What??? Ferrari engines have been getting ridiculously big for years now. No longer can you say things like "Ferraris smaller more efficient engines out perform other bigger engines"

I wish they would return to a maximum of 3 litres like they used to be!
