About 18 years ago there was a Miura in the twin cities area here supposedly for $3000. Apparently, as I heard the story through my brother who owned an answering service, a customer of his owned the car. Seems his son began disassembling the car until it was all in boxes all over the garage and then no one knew how to put it back together. I tried to get the number of the guy but he left the service before my brother was able to locate him. Drove me nuts wanting to find that car.

Well it CAN be done with the engine in, but it's really not worth the effort. Europa engines are very easy to pull, and since the mounts tend to crack with age/stress it's a good thing to replace them anyway.

The windshield alone is worth $750, and other bits made of unobtanium are also well sought after. The transmission bell housing is good as gold. The engine, if rebuilt and fresh will fetch over $5k all day long.

I don't know if I've told my Gullwing story before, but here goes. I bought a fuel injection unit from a guy in a small town here in Arkansas. We started swapping car stories and he mentioned that one time he was in Portugal staying at some large hotel. He said that as he looked out across the surrounding area, he noticed an old car behind a fence in a grown up lot. A closer look revealed that it was a Gullwing Mercedes that had been sitting for years. This guy knew his cars pretty well. Of course being a stranger in a strange place, he had no real way to find out who the owner was or even try to make a deal for it. So another classic got away.

I remember many moons ago looking at an MGA in Wichita, Kansas and the fellow at the service station had a customers Mercedes gull-wing coupe for sale for $11,000. I thought he meant $1,100 and went back to double check and he said yes,$11,000 was the correct figure. My friend and I laughed our butts off saying he will take that car to his grave 'cause nobody would shell out that kind of money on a foreign car. I have applied that same keen foresight to the stock market many times since.

If that is true, I can look into it next summer. I spend my summers there every year. Hopefully it would be near Lisbon.

    Any more info?

Last year I worked up in the South Bend, Indiana area and one of my co-workers started telling me about some abandoned cars that he passed over the summers working out of town. Three of them stuck out in my head as being amazing:

1.) Guy in the New Buffalo, Michigan area with a Ferrari Testarossa that had been sitting in his garage for about 10 YEARS without moving. He said last time he checked (in spring 2003) the car was still there.

2.) Guy in northern Indiana (forget city name) that had a Ferrari 308 sitting in his garage (garage door open most of the time) and the car had not moved in about 10 years as well. The guy was selling his house and actually trying to throw in the Ferrari for free just so he did not have to move it. I had my friend go to this guys house and tell him I would buy the car right now, no questions asked. My friend went to try and make the offer on the car and found out that the owner had just sold it to a relative from Arizona for only $5,000 on the condition that the relative had to come pick it up.

3.) Guy in Northern Indiana (forgot city name again) who has a red Dodge Viper RT-10 sitting in a small open garage with airconditioning units stacked on the hood and all sorts of other random stuff on the car. Evidently it has been there for several years with no movement as well.

I just want to find one of these cars....okay, maybe two....and bring them back to life.

No more info. It was probably over 20 years ago when the guy saw the car.

    Saw it today.

All original, except for the exhaust. Last driven in 1970 when it was parked with 57K on the odometer. 6 volt system. Original radio, rims, hubcaps, jack, no tools or books.

All numbers match, a little, very little, surface rust. All of the body panels are solid. It's gonna need paint, interior, exhaust and some repairs to the front left (appears to be brakes that went bad). Otherwise looks very solid.

Included in the deal is a somewhat worse for the wear '67 beetle. Anyone interested?

Working up a shopping list for it now, before we make an offer.

Not Ferrari, but I love barn find stories and figured this is worth resurrecting the thread. Here are a couple of my projects as they were found about a year and a half ago. Ironically, they are now back in a barn while the drivetrains are being restored. Anyone want to play a little guessing game as to what they are (the red one's pretty easy; the white one is worth bonus points).

Red is a Maserati Mistral. White one looks like a Ghia Fiat 1500 GT.

Come down to the Maserati section on this site, we'd be happy to hear more about your Mistral and its restoration. :)

^^ Well done, both of you^^

Here's how they're supposed to look (not mine):

btw: I love the color of the Mondial behind the Mistral. Kind of an Azzuro-Grigio? The color looks balanced in the rest of the pic so I'm guessing it's correct. Anyone know what that is?
