I look at one set pics of the rear of a 288 GTO and it has four small stubby pipes (as you would find on a 308), but on Monday I had the privelage of being driven around Silverstone in a 288, and his exhaust consisted of two huge "blunderbuss" style tapered exhausts.

Which is original, and if they are both original how come there are two types?

the four small pipes are the standard ones (two small ones on either side)
I think the two larger exhausts you are refering to are 'ansa' sports exhausts as these were the thing to have at the time (dont think tubi was around then). If the diameter of the pipes increases as they extend from the car then i think they are ansa's. I think they used to be nick named 'megaphones'!

It was similar to this one?

The 288 you saw could have been the one that was in the Ferrari supercar test (288, F40, F50, Enzo) in the car magazine EVO. (February 2004 issue)

The 288 GTO was for sale at DK engineering uk back then.

"megaphones" exhaust is what I'v been told.

It was actually one of the few options on the car: cloth seat inserts, stereo, A/C, and "F1" Exhaust.

And yes, those megaphones work as a standard cheer leader's do. They make it louder. They also work to scavenge the hot exhaust gasses out of the muffler. Or so was the theory. http://www.burnsstainless.com/Megaphones/megaphones.html

Some of the old Porsche 911 used to have them as well.

JohnT I know that turn at the background... That's Road America!

Tubi does make an exaust for the 288. I put it on my 288. It is awesome and doesn't look much different than stock except the pipes have a slightly larger diameter.

I'm pretty sure this isn't the ANSA system that my old man had on his 288. The metal was slightly thicker and I think the pipes extended slightly further from the rear of the car. It was a long time ago though!
