Pray you don't have to pay for any maintenance!

The WRX is excellent bang for your buck. It will not cost you an arm and a leg in maintenance. You don't want an F-car on a Jap car budget. Then there is fuel economy to think about. I would go with the practical car until you can afford to own an F-car or P-car. The 944s are rubbish. Never been a fan of them. A friend had one and it was a POS (in his own words). He has just got rid of it (it was hard to move) and moved on to an early 90s 911. Sure the WRX does not look like much, but bang for buck you can't go wrong. Wheres Mike when one needs him?

Exactly my thoughts on the topic, although I don't mind the looks of the WRX actually (can be subtly improved also) ;)

Mike owned a 22B didn't he? That is the ultimate road-going WRX for me...... :)

    Mike is here.

Seriously, about the Impreza's. The bang for the buck on those things are awesome. Especially the STI.
The Subaru's ive owned in the past 5 years:

    97' Liberty
    97' Impreza 22B
    2003 Impreza STI
    2003 Impreza RS (Current)
    2005 Liberty 3.0R-B (Current)

Seriously, the quality, the power (especially the low end stuff), the handling and the cred, it makes for an awesome package.

Old porsches will cost you a fortune to keep running right. I have had NOT ONE problem with ANY of my Subaru's.
Not ONE Brake light blown. Not ONE flat tire. Nothing.
Ive had the 22b on gravel sideways at 140Km/Hr so dont say its because i drive like a putz. Ive currently only got 3 points left on my license.....:(

Seriously mate, if you want a good car, get a WRX. Or even an RS (Which i drive daily), witch dosnt have the desirability of the WRX, but is not far off it. handling wise, and can hold its own in the power war.

If you want to know more, please Pm me or something

Here are some photos of the Liberty as i picked it up...

The press release re: The 22b

    Australian 22b Press Release 5th June 1998

A limited edition run of the exclusive Subaru Impreza WRX coupe has sold out in Japan in 24 hours. The vehicles known as the Subaru Impreza Sports Coupe 22B-STi Version are a road going version of the successful Subaru Impreza World Rally Car (WRC). They were built as a co-operative effort between Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) and Subaru Tecnica International (STi).

The 22B-STi Version was developed with the aim of recreating the sporty appearance of the Impreza World Rally Car while at the same time balancing performance and driving pleasure with utility, dependability and durability. 'The result is a sports coupe that seeks to deliver the highest level of performance for road use", according to STi President Mr Yamada.

Only 400 of these vehicles were manufactured for the Japanese domestic market and Subaru is hopeful five may be released in Australia from a very small export run. These very exclusive vehicles have been made to Japanese specifications and therefore can not be registered as a regular passenger vehicle. However Subaru expects they will be purchased for motor sports or as collectors' items.

The Impreza 22B-STi Version features an adjustable spoiler, 17" gold alloy wheels and a 2.2 litre DOHC turbo engine. The engine delivers a sizzling 206Kw of power at 6000rpm and 360Nm of torque at 3200rpm. It is expected to retail in Australia for approximately \$110,000 - \$130,000 if it is released here.

From its initial planning stage, the Impreza, which debuted in Japan in November 1992, was developed as a car that would meet the challenge of motor sports in events such as the WRC. Australian sales started in March 1993 with the original WRX going on sale 12 months later. FHI began participating full-time in the WRC through STi in 1990 to gain valuable technical know-how from the rigorous rally driving conditions and apply this knowledge to the development of mass-produced cars.

In 1995, Subaru won its first championship, capturing both the Driver's and Manufacturer's Titles, in only its sixth year in the WRC competition. Subaru won the Manufacturer's Title again in 1996 and 1997, becoming the first Japanese automobile maker to win three consecutive titles.

Subaru vehicles are fully imported from Japan and are renowned for their quality, safety, performance and commitment to All-Wheel Drive (AWD) technology.

All-Wheel Drive (AWD) is an inherent part of Subaru's automotive philosophy, offering both the highest levels of active safety and driving enjoyment.

All-Wheel Drive means maximum grip because the engine's power is directed to all four wheels, not just the front or rear wheels. Therefore it ensures excellent stability, road holding and traction on any surface - rain, hail or shine.

Thanks for the info Mike, very interesting :) Do you have any pics of the 22B you owned?

I am working/saving hard to get the WRX, but an STi might be stretching it at this stage although its obviously the better car.

I have considered a few other cars (Renault Clio 182 Cup for example) but after the test drive in the Rex I am convinced it is the car I want :)

The salesman showed me what it is capable of around some quiet back streets - the braking was especially impressive actually :) I didn't even ask for a drive myself but he pulled over and told me to drive so I obliged :D

Thanks for the offer, once I am closer to the purchase I might take you up on that ;)

Finally we have some sanity :)

All the power, handling, brakes on a tight budget and in a four banger! Can't go wrong if your on a budget. Even hesistate to say its quite practical and economical! On paper it looks like such a good idea.

Damn.. *pondering* now I am actually considering one. Ive done the hard sell on myself. Might have to take one for a test drive. I hear the dealers are not too keen on people test driving their WRXs. Hmm I wonder why? :D

Hmm... sounds fun. Might have to put that one to the test.

Do scoobys have ESP or similar? Can one turn it off?

I was at PI the day after a WRX club day (their results were still pinned to the board). The times were VERY unimpressive, much slower than the HSV day I was at last weekend for example.
PP is this why you hang out with the REX crew, because it makes you shine like a star ;)

Anyway, what are you guys doing up so early. or haven't you gone to bed yet?

    Hhhmm.
I know the new models have electronic braking distribution. Not sure on ESP. Im thinking they dont even have. The reason being, they dont need it.

What were the track conditions for that day?
Of course the HSV's are gonna be fast on PI, especially given that straight.

The WRX's are fast cars. But not the fastest. I mean, you have always got to keep in mind the $$ factor when comparing the WRX to anything. Hence why its favourable by many people.
A 55k Clubsport going up against a 42K WRX with 13K of mods done to it, i can assure you the WRX will come out on top. :)

I think that's SteveP's car from the UK section

WRX's are just downright ugly,...fast, but ugly

you NEVER find a Ferrari owner looking at a wrx thinking "I would love that car" unless they are mad or the Fezza is broken down :)

When will people realise that what makes a good car isn't in the 1/4 mile and 0-100 time?

Even if his car was modded enough for him to beat you, I don't think he would be driving home from the track.

I know some Ferrari owners who are wankers and look upon people as being better then them but the majority of Ferrari owners are great people who love motorsport and are genuine enthusiasts.

I bet if those guys could afford a Ferrari they wouldn't be driving a nissan. Even if there car could "smash" a ferrari!

No car will ever compare to the passion you get driving a Ferrari.

To actually hit the topic, and this is coming from a non F-car owner obviously:

Back in my younger days (even though I am still in them), it comes down to a bit of jealousy, and a bit of the Ferrari owners having a car so much better than you that they are kind of unapproachable.

Some owner live in a different world (I'm not saying that is a bad thing), but then some are very much unwilling to chat to the "peasants" as we are called when we are all just car guys in the end.

Get a couple of bad experiences with a F-car owner, and that's what you end up with.

It's all stereotypes, just like the "fully sick" comment of earlier in the thread.

Just my two cents and back to lurking I go.
