    Yo Ding,

dont let these dudes scare you off the WRX, i had an MY02 and it was awesome, was quicker than most other cars and really usable. Id never trade my lotus for one, but on a budget theres really nothing that beats it.

Just some friendly advice, stick to an MY02 not an 01, because it had a shorter ratio gearbox (much shorter ratios) and made the car faster, more driveable and more fun.

other things that the 02 had different to the 01 is, the radio antena on the 01 is on the A pillar where in the 02 is in the rear window.
The interior on the 01 is black, where the interior on the 02 (some parts of it anyway) are dark grey, doesnt sound like a big deal, but the black looks a little more plasticy.

If you have any questions about 01 & 02 WRX's feel free to PM me, im happy to chat, or even call me if you want.

    Cheers

Don't listen to all the "wankers". I used to own a WRX a few years back.
Great car at that price bracket and a good choice.

Yep I've been told that before, and the one I drove was a MY02 but I'm yet to drive an MY01 so I can't compare the difference personally. However from what you've said and others I will definately aim for an MY02 ;)

As I said to Mike thanks for the offer of help/advice, and once I am closer to buying it I will let you guys know ;)

Currently I am just keeping my eyes/ears open to see whats available and get an idea what I can expect once I have all the money saved up. :)

I'm not listening much :D , as for my age (23) and current situation I think a WRX is a perfect car :)

luckily I don't plan on keeping the thing for 30yrs ;)

luckily I don't plan on keeping it for 1/3 of that time either - when I am 27 or 28 I hope to be able to afford something better yet again ;)

I too hope to work my way up to an F car (or money permitting an L car), but now that im over the whole Jap car thing (i am over it, but still admire them for the awesome performance, reliability, affordability and fun they offer) I could have purchased myself a nice 3X8 for my budget, however i also wanted a small piece of reliability, so for my money i currently purchased a Lotus, as its far later model and shouldnt cost me a heap to maintain and will blow the doors of most 3X8's around.

but once i earn another couple million, ill definately be rollin my F car, and after another perhaps 5 million beyond that then my L car.

but to summarise, WRX is a good car and nothing really compares for the money except perhaps an EVO,

and back to the original topic, no matter what you drive, some people will always be jealous. I was driving my MR2 (many moons ago now) and some dude actually spat on it as i was driving past, so you cant control other idiots behaviour. just enjoy what you have and be sure not to piss anyone off sufficiently enough for them to damage your pride & joy

I usually just smile but do and say nothing, while thinking to myself.... "I'm being paid to drive this car, and if I offered to let you drive it, would you say no, for fear of being labelled a wanker??....." LOSER.....

I definitely never race them of show off. Let 'em wonder. (Plus most rice crackers are too fast anyway)

As for buying Subies as a 20 something.......... Yeah, if you want, but it'll just delay you getting the Ferrari that you can already nearly affford. Put the money (for car AND insurance) away, drive a 5H1T80X for a bit longer, and get the Ferrari sooner... unless you know you're going to be loaded at some point soon of course...

Which Ferrari are you thinking of? If I put away the ~$30K that the car will cost plus the ~$1200 insurance per year it will still be awhile before I get a Ferrari.........
I have entered this weekends $25 million Lotto draw so if that goes well I'll get the WRX and every Ferrari I can find :D

if it's Ferrari you've got your heart on, i can wholeheartedly recommend the GT4. forget the snobbery of it not being a "real" Fcar etc., it's got such a great classic Ferrari feel, but still goes harder than most new "performance" cars today. apart from the sydney one i drove, i spent some... "good" time in goober's concours-worthy GT4, and having just jumped out of a Gallardo... well, the smiles are just as broad.

however as i said, entrance fee is just one facet... as with any old italian it WILL require a lot of maintenance and care, and you probly won't want to use it everyday like you would a japcrap ricerocket.

as far as jap cars go, WRX and NSX are the only two i can off-the-top-of-my-melon consider not-crap.

thats the thing though, I DO need a car everyday so that would be a bit of a hassle. Therefore I think its better i buy a car that I can use on a daily basis (i.e. WRX) until I can afford to have a Ferrari as my second car for weekends etc. ;)

I pretty much agree, although I don't mind the Mitsubishi Evo's either :)

personally i could never get a new car in that price bracket. here's the way i look at it....

can you think of a classic car that you already love the looks of? what would it cost to buy a pristine one of those? how much leftover in your new car budget would you have to give it engine and suspension development? with those considerations would it kick the japanese-crap out of your "new" car?

you know what car i'm into, and i was in your position a while back. but i realized i loved the looks of a certain car, i just wanted it faster and better... so say i could buy a concours example for $5-10k then spend $15k on engine performance, $5k on suspension, $5k on customization and security.........

the other consideration i didn't mention however is that i'll never "trade-up" this car either, it will always have a place in my stable, unlike a new performance car which would become yesterday's news as soon as i could afford something better.
