Shall we move this thread over to the "Classic" forum with the rest of the 308 model specific info?

    If the 10th position in the VIN is a D it's an 83, E is 84 F is 85.

The only visual difference I have ever been able to find (at a glance) between 84 and 85 is the way the fuse panel cover attaches to the car

I put it in this forum for more visibility. I have actually worried that it may get moved.

Interesting thread here guys. I will check mine on friday when I pick it up from my mechanic.

So in brief : I have to check if there's a number stamped next to the High Voltage sticker right?

    Hey Tom:
    Your assembly number puts us in the 30-40 GTS/month based on our build dates;
My Jan.85/343 and your Feb 85/385 accounts for 42 cars that month. I think this supports the numbers we have been testing. Please keep the numbers coming in to get a better average!

Actually I have it on good authority that the numbers represent model build-numbers FOR EACH ITALIAN GOVERNMENT (ie SINCE THE LAST ITALIAN ELECTION). That explains why the number series often restart after only 6 months or so!

On the other hand, you'd think that they would stamp each FRAME once fabricated & before it moves to "down the line". Once fabb'ed you have an item that needs to be accounted for & tracked. No doubt some frames are fabb'ed but then lie around a while until more "GTBs", etc are needed. maybe this explains the odd "backwards" numbering compared to model date?

what if this numbering is based on what you said, and the numbers are used to track cars produced by raw chasis type for an inventory tax? perhaps it was for a short term period that they numbered the cars to pay a flat rate manufactures tax?

The chassis number is stamped into it too. Why not just use this for the same thing instead of adding another, different number?

i thought about that, but look at it this way, neither ferrari nor the ferrari experts have any real clue as to the way the chasis numbering system really worked in the earlier days. so perhaps a truely liner internal system was used for tax / inventory purposes?

Maybe they didn't stamp the frame number until the car was
completed and used the hidden number for assembly
records before it got a proper vin???

I know of a manufacturer that at one time did not stamp engine
numbers until vehicle was road tested with no problems,
    engine numbers were added last.

    My 84 gts...

I hope I don't disturb the flow of this post, but I would like to know if anyone knows where to find the sequence number on a 1976 308GTB with a July 76 date on it???

I have looked everywhere and am coming up blank.

    Any ideas?

Hello Mark, the number for the early cars is located on the ignition coil mounting plate. As for these numbers, they are the scaglietti build numbers. All of the cars body, interior and trim parts will have this number.
