Spent 4 Jy week vacation developing Unobtainium Molds & a formula/process for a very strong fibreglass reinforced injectable polyurethane casting compound. The Boot Lid Prop Flex Joint in the photos is one of the set of production parts. The two steel pivot pins are from Carreaper's original part, all 3 plastic parts are brand new!

I repaired the broken-off ear on Carreaper's flex end (See photo at beginning of this thread) by making a rough temporary mold out of modeling clay using the other ear, then used my mill to clean the repair up & match the other ear.

Like most other adhesives, my casting material only weakly bonds to Ferrari's plastic. However, the temporary ear lasted long enough for me to make a good mold of the broken end as well as the other 2 pieces. The temporary ear fell off while removing the 'master' part from the 2nd half of the mold & bounced into the nether regions of my basement mfg. area. Stopped searching once I verified that the mold produces good parts.

I also touched up some chips in the original parts with clay before making the mold. The repairs did leave a few small marks that could be sanded off if you were so inclined.

If you need a complete Boot Lid Flex Joint, or just one of the pieces, send eMAIL to:

    Verell,
Awesome work! You the man! How did you end up putting the fiberglass fibers in the mix and injecting it? Last I heard, you were having a hard time coming up with a good process.

Looks great. I take it that this is for the top of the prop rod? Does anyone have a photo of the slider that goes on the bottom? Mine broke off before I bought the car and I'd like to see if I could put something functional together.

Since it took me an inordinate amount of time to get sorted out, I'm considering it a trade secret. If I'd known how much time I was going to sink into it I might have thrown in the towel. I estimate I spent something like 60 to 80 hours & a fair amount of $$ before I got it figured out.

Your modeling and casting skills alone are a marvel to our community. Keep up the good work. I don't need one of those, yet. But I probably will. You should maybe make a few up a head.

    BigTex,
Yes, the boot prop flex joints are in production.
This is probably the thread you were asking about.

    greg328,
I don't remember seeing your order while going thru my back eMAIL this weekend. Do you still want one.

See ordering directions a couple of posts back.

No wonder, the Thread title should be changed!

From "carreaper crying 'help'" to "1977 308GTB Hood prop rod repair".....

Is that fitting at the top of the rod? It doesn't look familair, but the break on mine was at the bottom end, at the spring cable 'trolley"......I don't recall exactly how I fixed it, but a hack saw and other implements of destruction were involved.....

Thanks for the 'bump' on this thread!

    Verell,
I do want one. My OEM rod upper hinge is OK now, but that plastic piece is living on borrowed time, for sure!

Are they done, and you can ship upon receipt of payment?

I'll send the order to your e-mail...

I've been making the parts to order since this summer. At this point, I do happen to have a couple of each style on the shelf, so can ship as soon as I get your order.

As always, payment is not due until you've received the parts & approve of them. However, if you insist on paying in advance, I won't quibble.

These are small, so shipping with tracking will be about $5.

To order, just send eMAIL to:

    TO: [email protected]

Verell, prop worked a treat. Thanks again.

(posting a photograph to create awareness of this great reproduction part)

Stronger than the original you say?

It's strong, it's a composit resin, about 50% fibreglass in one of the strongest of the casting polyurethanes. The poly is significantly stronger than the polyester resin used for regular fibreglass. It also has a higher temp rating.

Since I don't have a way of determining what plastic F* used for the original flex joints, I can't say for sure, but suspect it's quite a bit stronger as the original doesn't seem to be a fibreglass composit.

Thanks for the picture, nice to see one in use.

I need the bottom end rod fitting also.....I should have taken it off the other cars....this is an odd duck Verell, it has a metal piece of strap embedded into the plastic cap, to meet the travel trolley via press in pin..

The boot prop bottom is also on my round2it list for production.

If anyone has a broken one I'd appreciate it as I need the dimensions for the metal insert.
