There have been a few spotted in the US, but not in private hands. Mostly people who work for BMW. They have been out in Europe for a few months now. Jeremy Clarkson test drove it this past Sunday on Top Gear. He hated it for the most part under 400hp mode, but once he put it in the 507hp setting, he said it became a real M5. I'm still not crazy about the looks, not sleeper enough for me.

Edit: He said he blew up the rear diff around the track and the Stig was wearing out his a lot, too. They said it was a fragile car.

What are specs vs. previous M5? Isn't the new one V-10?

New one is a 5.0L V10 that starts in 400hp mode. User has to push a button that gives it 507hp. 7-speed SMG III gearbox for Europe, but US will get a choice between the 6-speed manual or 7-speed SMG. The 6 speed will have the same gear ratios as the first 6 gears of the 7-speed, just won't have a higher top speed. Last M5 had a 4.9L V8 and only came in 6-speed manual, 394hp. Both have approx. 0-60 times of 4.7. Top speed of new M5 is around 204mph old one I think is around 190 (I'm not 100% on the old one).

US dealers received allocations this week, so first cars have been/are being spec'd for fall delivery. Per dealer, all SMG initially, full-manual available in six months.

For the value shopper like me I'm still interested in the previous M5. Doesn't seem like much more bang for the buck, even looks. One reason I kept my E36 325is, the performance and looks of the E46 weren't worth the $20-25k hit. I've seen some nice previous M5's going for $36-38k. Maybe in a year with plenty of new M5's out they will be $28-30k?

…hmm, then we get back to the entire 456 vs. M5 thing. :)

I have ridden in the new M5 while on a race through france this past June. The owner told me it was the American spec car but it was in Europe so I don't know for sure (not really a BMW guy so I wasn't able to reconginze any subtle differences). The car is amazing, when I was in it there were 4 people in the car, AC blasting, riding comfortable and still taking turns so hard that it made your internals tighten and beg for more. The car with only 2 people in it kept up with all the ferrari 360's in the turns - couldnt keep up with our Diablo VT though, not in the turns atleast - straight line it was about equal and the VT engine had a fully upgraded intake and exhaust system! I have a 2:30 minute video taking from the rear of the M5 when I was in it if anyone wants to see it, very shaky as the roads were insanely bumpy. I will just have to find a place to host it. I also have some videos of us following the M5 from the lamborighini, you can see how flat the M5 is even through the tight turns!

I've driven one (only one in the country) and had a play with a disassembled engine.

Awesome machine. The HUD is a nifty addition, too. ;)

Oh yeah, I realized that too. We need the mods to close all the old threads, or put a warning saying that the poster is posting on an old old thread.

I've got 39k trouble free miles on my 2006 e60 M5...after owning an e34 and e39 M5, I can tell you that the new e60 M5 looks, drives, handles and is faster by a large margin than all of the previous M5s...it is simply the best M5 ever ... the SMG is the way to go for both daily driving and track use...
