Most underrated "supercar" is definatly the Xj220. Price vs performonce.

Other mentioned cars are neat but not in the same class.

I always thought my 86 GTI 8V was a super car.

Is the Koenig Twin Turbo Testarossa a good addition to this list..?

These things were custom built to the customer's specs, had wild bodywork and interiors, their engines were equipped with 2 turbos AND a supercharger, and made around 750 HP!!!

So why does everyone talk about them like they were the inbred trashy cousin of the Chrysler/Maserati TC........?

I love these monsters, and wish I had one in my garage.

    My 2C......

I can't agree with the 959. IMO it is overrated. Granted it was a technolically advanced car for its time, it can be beaten today by a Turbo.

Supercars should be rated in relation to their peers. The 959's helped pave the way for successor production Porsches so they could be faster and better in their time.

Well stated. The 959 is a masterpiece, however I wouldnt call it under-rated. It was Porsche's awnser to the F40, and is highly sought after even to this day.

I thought the 959 was built BEFORE the F40?

Ahhhhh you may have me there. I believe that in reality, the F40 was Ferrari's awnser to the 959. Thanks for the correction.

I guess it depends on what your definition of supercar is.

I would say the ENZO and F40 are supercars. I would say the NSX would not fit in that category.

I would put the NSX as the most underrateed exotic sports car of all time -- however, not by the magazines because they all praise it. It is underrated by people have never driven one and only look at HP figures. Strangely enough, they seem to like it after they have had their ass handed to them by a NSX on the track. :)

I believe the CLR "took off" twice that year at Le Mans. The second time it ended up between the trees (or was that the first time)

Dont forget the Cizeta, often overlooked due to low volume production, but still an insane car even today.
Whilst another favourite of mine is not just overlooked its completely forgotten by most.Thats the Aston Martin Vantage Zagato of 1986 in its day the fastest production car in the world. (dont forget in 86 the f40 wasn't even out, and the GTO and 959 were not seen as production cars)
Many think its ugly but having grown up with it, i see its beauty and its admired in aston circles amongst those who know.

I think it took off about 3 times (at least if iirc). I know two seperate times it happened with Mark Webber! That's got to suck because I wouldn't trust the car anymore if that happened more than once. Luckily, Merc pulled the car out before the race started.

The CLK-GTR and CLK-LM were great race cars winning the FIA GT in 97 and 98 as previously mentioned. I think that car is underrated and prices on road cars have fallen (unlike the McLaren F1).

The Porsche GT1 is also underrated imo and it won LeMans in 1998 (although a different looking GT1 for that season compared to the 96 and 97 cars).

I think the 959 got the attention it deserved because it was such a great car.

The XJ220 is an amazing car that was just introduced at the wrong time. The hype surrounding it was strong because it was being developed at the right time, but by the time it came out the supercar market softened.
Don't foget the XJ220 S which can be compared to the CLK-GTR and 911 GT1 as it has 680 hp and is even lighter than the normal XJ220.

As some have already stated, the NSX really doesn't fit into the supercar league. It does have it's place in history and it's a very respectable car because of what it's capable of in terms of driving dynamics, but also because it was probably the greatest Japanese car ever introduced that really made people think twice about Japanese performance cars.

The BMW M1 is the car that started it all for the ///M division, but it wasn't such a successful car. The fact that it is the first ///M car is very significant though.
