Hi All, just wondering as of when the 328 was available with rear window heating and sprays to clean front lights... Haven't seen that listed in K. Bluemel's book or any other brochure/ magazine article I read. Mine does not have either (Euro mid 1988 328 GTS). Was this specific to one market place (US ?) or can anybody shed a light ... By the way, is it possible to install a heated rear window if you don't have the switch to turn it on (maybe some aftermarket switch).. Would be helpful in wintertime so you don' t need to turn on the airco all the time... Don't want the washers for the front lights; would destry the fine lines ) Cheers from Brussels Frank
My US market 1987 328 has a rear window defroster. I've never heard of front light sprays. What source is saying they had them?
Head light washers were Euro only IIRC, same as rear fog lights. No US spec carfs came with either. Regards, Vern
To my knowledge, no headlight washers were ever stock. Not on Euro's, for sure. The Euro GTB on the cover of my copy of Bluemels book has washers ....
I have never heard of headlight washers on any 328. All the US cars have rear defrosters as far as I know. US cars had very few options. Metallic paint was the main one. The rear spoiler could be painted body color but that was rare and I think only offered on 88-89 cars. Recently an 89 GTB came to light with rear spoiler deleted, but I don't know if they charged for it or not. It is my understanding the rear spoiler was actually an option in Europe and many cars do not have it. Dave
You are the first person I have heard that actually would use that function. I disconnected mine so I could use the switch to activate an oil cooler fan as needed ( track time and stop and go traffic). Ferrari actually had a problem with the rear window breaking from it back in the early 80's. More than a couple of those windows had to be replaced by the dealer.
The right-side mirror was actually a no-cost option, but I have never seen a 328 without one. Unfortunately, it came with conventional glass (at least for 1986) which made it almost worthless. I modified mine by having a piece of wide-angle glass cut to shape and attaching it with double-sided tape. Made an enormous difference!
The 87 is the same. I've found that if it's adjusted right, it's very good for tracking where the traffic is. You just have to have it set WAY outboard, and cars will show up in it just as they leave the rear view mirror
a. all US 328's had rear windows with defroster inbuilt b. some Euro 328's had front light washers c. none of the repondents seem to be using either washers or the rear defroster function remaining questions: - why was heated rear window not offered in Europe and why were washers not offered in US (seems like you would probably need both under same climatological conditions, i.e. bad cold rainy weather...) - still like to see the first piece of printed advertising material that takes about these options... P.S. guess I will live without either and just drive in nice weather as usual.... Greets, F.
Hello! All Swedish sold cars HAVE headlight washers, because of the Swedish law. So it is easy to see if the car is sold new in sweden. But it does not look that good. My is sold new in Germany so i don´t have it. But i have rear foglight. Stefan
What else was optional on the 328 or standard depending on the country. I was in a discussion in another section about leather headliners, rear window surrounds. Anyone know if this was an option on the GTS or only GTB. Pics of window sticker (or just the options part) would be great.
'Unfortunately, it came with conventional glass (at least for 1986" The same for the US '89. And, as noted above, the right mirror is shown in my window sticker as an option but with no charge. Here's the sticker, (including the 1500USD Gas Guzzler tax! The mirror was the only option on the car. If you click on the image it will enlarge slightly.
. Mine is a Swiss market version sold new in Stockholm (see remarks made by "Stefan 328") Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
to add to what Stefan said.... those of us in the U.S. may remember older Saabs and Volvos had the little headlight washer/wipers many years before you saw them on other cars. It was the law in Sweden and they included them on the U.S. market versions as they were always promoting their safety features anyway. I have them on my Saab 900 (washer and wiper) and they do help. On the 328 (washer only) I have they are more a matter of "checking off a box" rather than being very functional. The little plastic washer pump simply does not produce enough pressure to do much good (unlike the pumps on modern cars).
Here is a link to some photos of an 89 328 GTS that has the headlamp washers, no rear spoiler, but rear foglamps. http://www.rossab.se/bilar/ross/images/328_gts_02.jpg http://www.rossab.se/bilar/ross/images/328_gts_06.jpg http://www.rossab.se/bilar/ross/images/328_gts_04.jpg http://www.rossab.se/bilar/ross/images/328_gts_10.jpg www.rossab.se Best regards, Dino
