    Hi All,

I'm new here, and this is my first Ferrari. I bought it with 81,300 miles, and drove it the 800 miles here to LA last week. It now has 82,400 miles on it.

I'm sure this is a long-shot; But, I'm looking for any history I can find on this vehicle, as I got precious little with the purchase.

The last owner (seller) who purchased the car with 80,000 miles (as a favor to a relative who could not afford the car) has promised to send me the manual and some receipts from when the engine was rebuilt by the previous owner in (I think) 2003 or 2004. The rebuild was performed by Valtellina Automobili, of Sausalito, CA.

The previous owner (who purchased the car with about 60,000 miles) has given me a verbal history of the vehicle from when he bought it in Manhattan, NY, in 2000, and drove it out here to California. He has also agreed to give me the original documents he has on the car if/when he comes back out here to California, from Buenos Aries. He's a well known winemaker, so I'm sure he'll be back here sometime. I think he really misses the car.

I also know the car was put up for auction at Barrett-Jckson (in Arizona) in the Summer of 1991 (or '96, there are two references) and the bid it received of $19K was not accepted.

"Features the first generation one-piece U.S. front bumper, but later series full-width lower grille and panel.", says Keith Martin in Forza magazine.

Note: The grille is currently missing.

But anything else that anyone might know about this car would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks a bunch!

    Also interested in:

    1) I would like to replace the grille, should anyone have a lead on one that'll fit.

    2) It needs a new exhaust. Doesn't really "need" a new exhaust. But my ears need something a little less Ferrocious (spelling intended!) sounding. It is currently is running two 18" glasspacks. Which sounds awesome. But I'm almost 50, and I don't want to "go out" deaf. Used? Trade? Would Tubi's be quieter? Or should I just get Ansa's?

Hey there! Great looking GT4. I just bought my first - a '79 308GT4 - in January. Yours looks to be in great shape from the pictures you posted. Enjoy your time here...lots of great people.

In terms of exhuast, forget Tubi. The exhuast will set you back more than 10% of what you paid for the car, and you won't get that back when you go to sell (not that that is in your plans anytime soon!). Ansa, Stebro, and Superformance are all alternatives for the 308-series cars that are much more affordable.

Best regards, and again - WELCOME.

David Welcome to the "exclusive" GT4 ownership club. :D

10314 was on e-bay May 04 in SF, Cal. It didn't meet reserve, the top bid was $15K. You might contact Peter ( http://www.dino-gt4-registry.com/ ) to see what he has. A few years back he had it listed as being in PA.

The PO of my car had an ANSA installed many years ago. It sounded very nice without being intrusive.
When I got my car the carbs were way out of tune dumping alot of unburned fuel into the muffler were it burned. Eventually the ANSA's center bulkhead cracked into 3 pieces and it really got loud. I have to weld a new piece in or replace the muffler entirely before my hearing goes away completely.

    Aaron/Mike,

Thank you for the replies. What a friendly site this is!

Thank you for the link Mike. I've visited that site several times to compare the vehicles. And earlier today, I uploaded some more information and a picture.

I just proved it "really is" a true 2+2 that "really can" hold three 6+-footers! Haha! It's a bit of a squeeze, but my son (home on leave from the Air Force) is pretty thin. But there was plenty of room for his buddy (6'3"/230lbs) to move the seat forward a notch so my son could put his arms in his lap.

Went to my mechanic today, who drove the car and agreed, that the 3rd gear syncro is gone. So that'll be the first big project. In the meantime, I've learned to shift it (up) without grinding. So I'll be okay as long as I don't forget that it's not my Alfa!

I've read here on the board (here) that doing the syncro's is an engine-out-of-vehicle job. But my mechanic says, "No. It can be done in the vehicle. It's not so easy, but its better than pulling the engine". I'd rather do the job myself though. So for me, it probably would be necessary (if not easier in the long run) to pull the engine. But we'll see.

Taking it in on Monday to have dynamat added to the rear bulkhead and floors, interior detailed and headliner reglued in a little spot in the back where it's beginning to sag a tiny bit.

If anyone knows who has the best price on an Ansa exhaust; Please let me know.

Other than that, I'm having a BLAST!!!

    Thanks again for the replies!

    David,

Welcome to the GT4 club. Beautiful car you have there, looks like it's been well cared for. I notice it has the Dino emblem on the front, which is a nice touch.

Re: Exhaust- Like the others mentioned, your best bet might be Ansa. I have a stebro, and it sounds great, but is pretty loud. One of these days, I keep meaning to make a sound clip of the exhaust, but just haven't gotten around to it.

For manuals, technical bulletis, etc., you should check out www.dino308gt4.com in the download section (Gerrit V's site).

For other history, perhaps you can PM carbon (goes by NNO) on this site, as he may be able to get info from the FML archives.

    Hope this helps.

    EuroDino,

    Thank you. I agree completely.

I just watched LNR's post of the Dino on Top Gear, in the UK last night.

What a gas! ..or rather, what a lack of gas!

Watching the Dino prove it's superior reliability over the other two, was really comforting. Sure seems to have lost a lot of HP over the year though.

    Just blew a water hose.

Does that mean I've now been baptized?

Lot's of steam coming up from behind the A/C compressor. Water (no oil) dripping on the driveway.

Luckily, I was coming back from the grocery store, and was only a few hundred feet from home when I began to smell the steam. Looked out the rearview mirror and it looked..... Well.... (chuckle) typical Ferrari!

Oh man... Sorry to hear that. Yeah, I think it's safe to say that you've been baptized... (lol) :D

I don't know if you have a mechanic yet, but I believe there's a guy down in SoCal that comes VERY highly recommended - Eugenio, I think - who might be able to help you out. He has a website, but I can't for the life of me remember the address. It's something like "Euginio's Ferrari Service", so I bet if you do a search (on Google as well as here @ FChat), you'll find him.
Also be sure to check in at that SoCal section of this board.

I know LA is *huge*, and for all I know he's in Valencia while you're on the other side of town, but at least you'll know the name of one guy (if you don't already) who you can call for help. The Bay Area is the same way - we've got members scattered from Napa to Carmel, and mechanics everywhere in between.

Best of luck to you, my friend, and be sure to keep us posted with updates.

    Aaron/Joseph,

Thank you. Thank you SO MUCH. You guys are really great! The bomb!

I know one day, something will come up that I cannot handle. It's SO NICE to have a "support group". F.A. Hahaha!!!

Yes. I've seen Eugenio's website before. I like it, because he's not afraid to post his prices for basic procedures. That is a mark of integrity and honesty IMO. And that's also why he has such a long waiting list.

A friend of mine bought a Mondial 3.2 a few months ago, that needed a new clutch. He was then going to take his car to Eugenio's, but found the line was longer than he was willing to wait. So he took it to my mechanic (who is very well known in the Alfa world) instead. It was done in a day, and the cost a little less too.

However, (chuckle) if I start going to the mechanic for broken hoses, I'll never be able to afford this car! Besides... My mechanic will laugh at me!

But thank you! Truely. Thank you.

    Arrivederci!

    Big Tex,

    Thank you for the referrals.

Apparently, finding a muffler isn't going to be that easy. Apparently Ansa has stopped supplying new units for the GT4.

I talked to Tate at Caribou, who rebuilt a euro dino (see link below) and put a Tubi on it, and he loves the sound, and keeps getting asked, "What kind of engine did you put in there?".

I've heard .mpg's and .wav's of the Tubi, and it sounds quiet enough at low RPM, which is okay by me. And I think I can HANDLE the high RPM whine, because it's at such a high frequency. Also helpful: I took the car in to have Dynamat installed on the rear bulkhead, floor and panels that are behind the door, tonight. It should be ready tomrrow or Thursday.

What I can't HANDLE though, is the price! OMG!

Tranny CAN NOT BE DONE IN THE CAR. Motor MUST be pulled, and motor and transmission split on the bench. No two ways about it. Worries me your mechanic does not know this. :(

    Joseph,

Thank you for the links to eBay! What a great find. I should probably just buy that stuff outright. But I think I'll give the Oregon owner a call and see if he's found the original stuff. Thanks a bunch!

    Alex,

I'll send you a PM in a second. Yes. I'd like to get a little more info. Seems to have an interesting history... A little checkered maybe, but I'd sure like to sort a little more of that out.

    Gerrit,

Thank you. My mechanic is a well respected Alfa mechanic. One of the best in the country, and I'm sure he knows what he's talking about. But "for me", I'd probably be better of with a R&R. Otherwise, it seems I'd have to remove the entire suspension on the drivers side, just to get everything out properly. And that's seems like a lot of work too. Espicially since I don't have a lift. Best I could do is put it on stands, and work on my back. Not a pleasant thought. Also pulling it, will give me a chance to detail it, which would be really nice.

Thank you all for your help and input! I'm loving this site more and more each day.
